I remember a truck that a friend had in the eighties think it was a 76 or 77 that was a short wheel base truck with a factory fiberglass hood pretty wild graphics and hurricanes/turbines whatever you call them the hood decal had letters LRP had roll bar with I think water ski rack built into/on in and was pretty cool just wondered if anybody has heard of this and seen one I would like to track down the hood off this old truck for a toy anyway just bored and thought I would see later Mike

Lrp
I think Bigblock73 & Elgracho are our resident 'weird options' go to guys.
since you say it was a water ski type type option, meaning the beach or lake, I guess the LRP stood for Likely Rust Prone. For any Nam vets it meant something totally different. being a LeRP, as the LRP's were known, had to be a scary proposition. DAVE

Never heard of a LRP. I doubt it was a factory option, more than likely is was a regional dealer option. However, I could be wrong...GM did some strange things.

I remember some mid-80's Dodge vans having a graphics package with LRP in the decals. At least I think it was Dodge. They were "conversion" vans anyways. Maybe they are or were a company like "Trail Wagons", or "Centurion" that does custom things with new vehicles?

Re: Anyone ever heard of an LRP ???
Allright before I go any further, yes I realize I'm resurrecting a very old thread.
I've been researching these for a long time and this is the only mention I've ever found. My dad had one of these Stepsides, purchased new in '77, here in St. Louis. It's funny the things that stick in your brain from childhood. I couldn't tell you the kids name from down the street I played with every day, but I remember just about everything about all of my Dad's vehicles. I was 4 when we went to the dealership and remember crawling up into this truck begging him he to buy it. The dealer gave him a killer deal and home it went. They only had two, one in black, one in brown. He took the black. Ours was 4WD, lifted on I believe 33"'s, with the turbine style wheels, and had a canyon scene graphic down each side, roll bars, kc lights, dual fuel tanks, bucket seats with the center console and don't forget the 8 track. The LRP you mentioned, were just black letter decals on the very bottom of each door and was the first thing Dad removed, followed by a replacement chrome tube grill. Sadly he traded it for a Corvette in '81, never to be seen again. I've got pictures somewhere, I'll have to post when I locate them. If anyone knows where one is I'd love to hear about it. Looking back it was kind of gaudy, but I'd kill to have one. Thanks, Bob |

Re: Anyone ever heard of an LRP ???
LRP did customizing on vans and pickups in the seventies and early eighties on mostly GMC and Chevys. They were located in Lake Geneva WI. I've been trying to get a hold of someone who owned it to get copies of pics of some of their work. My brother bought a used '77 GMC shortbox in the early eighties with a desert scene and my Dad had a new '83 Jimmy custom painted there. I bought a '78 stepside lately and would like to see some pics of how they did them up back then. Anyone with pics and info. please post.

Re: Anyone ever heard of an LRP ???
Bringing this old thread back up to the top. It had no pics, so clearly that needs a little adjustment. I stumbled across one for sale yesterday, then, today, stumbled across several LRP mod trucks posted by SKT in the vintage pictures thread - so, thought I'd transpose a few here to close the loop in case anyone ever finds or buys one of these.
These awesome pics (1-4) were posted by SKT here in posts 253-357: And the 5th one is for sale on CL now here or here. So, I wonder if these were one of a kind customs done by the place in Geneva WI (i.e. pic 4 and 5 are the SAME truck, there was only ONE exactly like that) or if there were multiples made of each type. Hmm. Whatever the answer is, cool old stuff. (Thanks for posting these 1st 4 in the vintage picture thread SKT). Last edited by jocko; 04-14-2019 at 11:04 AM. |

Re: Anyone ever heard of an LRP ???
Here's the SPID and tailgate of the LRP for sale for reference. Helps illustrate that the truck wasn't born that way, these were mods done afterward.
To me, at least some of the work appears to be painted detail and not all decals (the tailgate, for example) - which makes me believe these were each unique and only one of each was done by the company in Wisconsin. Haven't seen two of the same yet either. Interesting.... Sure wish we had a vintage pic of the passenger side of the bed... at first glance, the driver bedside of the vintage pic seems to have a little bit different pattern than the passenger side of the one for sale at the moment. No idea if they would have done these symmetrically... While I'd ASSUME they were symmetrical, in custom air brush paint back in those days, they sometimes were not, i.e. all those trees and scenes were freehand airbrushed. |

Re: Anyone ever heard of an LRP ???
Makes perfect sense that this company was part of the 70's conversion van craze...

Re: Anyone ever heard of an LRP ???
I remember versions of our trucks that were "LRV" lux. rec. veh. they looked similar to those above. the time frame was 1982 - 1987. I don't remember them saying LRP though? anyways, I wonder if those above & the ones that I remember were maybe dealer or regional added options/versions that were sold? kinda like a "yenko"? I just remember how cool the trucks looked!! I have not seen any around since that time frame... which makes me more curious....

Re: Anyone ever heard of an LRP ???
Lrp was a company that did conversion vans. That’s why the few trucks they did were covered in shag
