Question WTB - 1/2 ton chevy 5 lug rear end for 1996 truck

I have a 1996 Chevy Silverado 5.7 (350) engine with automatic trans and I'm looking for a rear end to replace it with. I'm not sure what the gearing is (I'm not really an expert when it comes to this). Wouldn't the gears be the same if I get a rear end out of another truck the same year with same motor and trans?

Anyhow, if someone has one around here in Northern Cal, let me know what you want for it. I don't really want to have to ship the thing, it will probably be big $$$.

My e-mail is mc_krusty916@yahoo.com

Thanks.

Sweet. I'm here in Orangevale, so you're a neighbor.

Definately let me know when you will have it available, how much you want for it and we'll work something out.

The gears won't be the same necessarily, depending on whether or not you had a trailering package. You can check the glove box codes:

4x2, 3.08 ratio GU4
4x2, 3.42 ratio GU6
4x2, 3.73 ratio GT4
4x2, 4.10 ratio GT5

mine doesnt have posi, or limited slip, but it does have 3.73s. i have checked the glove box codes so i am sure of it. if you do want it, we can work something out. i am going to good guys in pleasinton next week to look for a rear end that i need, so hopefully i will find something and if you still want it then we can work something out. i didnt have a trailer package either.

Trailering package is independent of the rear-end ratio.

Sounds good. Let me know if / when you're ready to sell it.

Thanks for the codes Chris. Mine says GT4, so this sounds like it would be a perfect match.

Cool, that would be great. I'd like to get the '96 back where I can trust it again.

That's cool, I'm sure the swap isn't going to be too easy (they never seem to be). I hope you get the parts you need. I'll keep an eye open for another one, only because I'd like to get my '96 back to being a little more reliable. If I get another one, I'll definately let you know. Thanks for the updates and good luck.

hey, dude, i have the rest of my parts and i am currently knee deep in the front conversion. i should have if finished tonight or tomorrow, then wednesday a buddy is going to come over and help me drop the rear end and install the new one. so i will, hopefully, be ready to sell the stock one by this weekend if you still want it. let me know.

did you ever get any prices on a rear from a junkyard? im not sure how much, but my dad said try to get $350 for it, but i think that is to much, so if you want it ill give it to you for $250. its going to need a new gasket and fluid but other than that its in good shape!

let me know if you still want it, thanks, mike

hey russ, the front is done but the rear is going to take more time. me and a buddy put it in and it is going to require some mods to install. i gave it to my mechanic and he is going to do the work on it for me. he said i should have it back around early next week. im sorry if this screws things up for you. ill let you know more when i get more info! thanks, mike
