Inner door coating/treatment advise request - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I assume this coating is factory but, I'm really not keen on leaving it (and painting over it). I've heard that's what most do but that seems like a bad idea. The DS has surface rust creeping underneath it and will just continue to fall off over time. I imagine the same will happen to the PS in time.

I would like to get it all off but I'm really not sure if that is a feasible task without painstaking labor.

Has anyone tried to resolve this or have suggestions?

FYI my plan is to put sound dampening mat on the inside of the skin

Getting in there to work is a problem. It may not be the best solution and have no idea about long term...
What I did was use a stiff putty knife to remove as much of the loose stuff as possible, cleaned up any heavy rust spots, brushed on rust converter, and then shot it with two light coats of black flex seal.
Made sure it was all cleaned our good and the drain slots were clear. Topped it off with the sound pad.

Not an easy choice.
Disassemble the door and remove it and any rust.
Have the doors dipped in an acid to remove the coating with the rust and hope that every bit of the acid is neutralized before recoating.
Or do as MAC71Cheyenne said, which is what I did.

I did new door skins on a restoration project several years ago. Very involved and labor intensive, but I was able to access the inside before putting the new skins on.

For my door insides I knocked out what I could with a scraper and then hit the inside of the doors heavily with a garden sprayer full of ospho, and let it set for a couple of days.
Then went back and rinsed with 99 percent isopropol alcohol ( my normal garage solvent choice).
Then I hit them with a few coats of rattle can black.
i figure i can roll on some lizard skin or sound deadner later on

I used a butane torch and heated up the the old coating and scraped it off. Then after the inners were sand blasted I coated them with POR-15 metal prep and a semi-gloss coating. Turned out pretty good but a heck of a lot of work.
