Taking a road trip, 1987 V10 4X4 short step, about 2300 miles. Arrived

....should be used (and how much?) in the 10 bolt rear diff and the SM465 transmission? Warm climate once I arrive. (No synthetics)

Checklist;
Fresh engine installed (everything new,except fuel pump) new u joints, rebuilt rear brake system(fronts today), fresh tires, new shocks, and....

I’m guessing 80-90 gearlube in the diff and SM465 transmission. Transfer case is a different story, could be ATF or gear lube depending on the model. The NP203 takes 30W oil, NP205 takes 80-90 gearlube, NP207 and 208 take ATF.

4 qts for the SM465, and I use 80w90 without any additives.

Does the rear end have some variation on limited slip/locking? Those sometimes recommend a special fluid or additive. On most rear ends, you fill until the fluid starts coming back out the fill hole on the side. Two one quart bottles usually leaves you with one bottle still having most of the fluid in it.

Start out with windshield cleaning fluid of the below 0* variety, assuming a Maine to Texas trip.

If the rear brakes are drum, do a few sharp stops while in reverse to adjust the rears.

I'll defer on the lubricant selection for the rear diff and trans...

But definitely bring an extra fuel pump, or some line and a clicky clack electric pump. Cheap enough and I've had that bite me on road trips in old cars. The last road trip I took in my truck I flew down to SC and drove it back to Maine. I bought two sets of cheap sockets/ratchets off of Amazon (Stanley brand... honestly, I've used them to build my entire truck,) a set of screw drivers, and an adjustable wrench. Throw some basic wiring essentials in a box too. You'll have plenty of fuel stops to grab water and snacks along the way. I like to keep wheel bearings and seals and a small container of wheel bearing grease with me too.


Leaving Maine for the winter? Don't blame you. Hopefully next year is a little more normal and we can meet up next time you're in the north! Let me know if you need anything from up here while you're gone.

Traveled thru 16 states, 2400 miles and the truck was flawless. Ran it at 65-70 mph the whole way. Left Portland at 12:30am early Tuesday morning and arrived outside of Austin at 3:00pm Thursday afternoon.

The seat is what made the trip, really! That short wheel base, tightly sprung 4X4 beat me up bad, especially in LOUISIANA.
