Rear end tag straightening

Morning all, looked around a bit and didn't see what I was looking for. I took the rear end tags of off my 1972 GMC C20. Has dana 60, with 4.10 limited slip. I cleaned the rust with CLR and a brush, the limited slip tag is crinkled, any way of flattening, straightening it without ruining the stamping on it?

Re: Rear end tag straightening

I would put it in a vice with 2 pieces of soft pine against the jaws.

Re: Rear end tag straightening

I'd probably put it on a hard, solid flat surface (think the anvil portion of your vice or piece of 1/4" thick steel) with the raised lettering upward. Then take something like a piece of steel bar stock thin enough to place on edge between the lines of lettering and tap with a hammer. Even a wood paint stirrer may work.
