Glue some cloth to door panels?

My current door panels are painted but I was thinking I could get another pair and try my hand at gluing some cloth on like the picture. Just wondering if anyone has done this? What kind of cloth to get? Would it have to be a little stretchy to get it to conform to the indents? I was thinking I could get a couple of helpers to hold it just above and start from the center out, rubbing it into the indents.

Re: Glue some cloth to door panels?

Most any cloth will work, the material in your photo is a factory GM cloth. That stuff doesn’t have much stretch. I would avoid patterns or lines in the design, they will get distorted going over the shape of the panel.

I have used 3M super 77 when I don’t have access to commercial grade glue. It should work fine, but you should always test the glue on the material first. Glue can wick through some fabrics.

Also, be sure to use washers on the screws just like the photo, to avoid cutting the cloth with the screws.

Re: Glue some cloth to door panels?

The ones in my 66 are covered like the one in the pictures. The material matches my seat.
