Speedometer ?

Well got the tranny in today and got it running. Installed a new speedo cable cause the old one was broke and previous owner had disconnected it and filled the gear in the tranny with silicone. Anyway....I removed the silicone, installed the cable and all seemed well until I drove it. The cable makes a clicking noise and is consistent and the needle in the guage kinda bounces back and forth and all the way around. The needle also does the bounce or jump at the same time the click is heard Could this be the speedo gear in the tranny? I think it is rounded out but still catching the cable when the click is heard. I also think it is the gear because when I installed the new cable it fell into place to easy.

It could be the cable housing or the gauge itself. What part is rounded out? That could be causing the jumping and might eliminate the other two ideas.

You might try to spin the cable down by the tranny to see if the speedo bounces with the drill driving it. Would also allow you to track down the clicking if it still does.

I think the speedo gear in the tranny is rounded out. The clicking noise is coming from the guage so the guage may be the problem. I had the dash apart acouple of weeks ago and had the speedo guage out and the part that holds the gears in that spins the odometer numbers was broke and the little pin that holds those gears was moving around, up and down. It was really sloppy.

The speedo is bad. I took the cable loose from the tranny and hooked a drill to it and it is clicking and bouncing with the drill. I also had to get the cable just right to go back into the tranny gear so it must be ok.
