How much does this rear bumper weigh? Removal...

I am trying to remove the damaged rear bumper on my 72 GMC. The bumper and brackets are all one piece, so I can't take the bumper off the bracket unless I were to cut it and I don't the tools to do that.

I got the back bolt out on each side, but before I get the front two out and drop this thing on my head and kill myself I thought I'd try to see how much it is going to weigh.

Any tips on how I could support it to keep from killing myself with it? I am thinking I'll try to put a couple of jack stands under it, but I don't really know where the "balance point" will be....

And as you can see, it's going to land on my exhaust. Maybe that helps keep me from crushing my own head....

Don't know the weight, but solid and definitely heavy. I would stack some blocks under each side until they are just short of contacting the bumper. But be careful of the brackets when you finally remove the last bolts. Because the brackets will create an off balance condition. Just slide the blocks out one side at a time and then remove from the blocks. My best guess in any case. Reread your post. Balance wise I would keep them close to the mounting brackets. 12" long blocks would give you a better contact point for the bumper. Jack stands don't usually have that much area, so more likely to want to roll off them. Loosen the rear hangers for your exhaust to give yourself a little flexibility while dealing with the removal.

I'm going to guest it weighs near 100 pounds. Regardless of its weight, I would screw together some blocks of wood and make a cradle for it. This way, when the last bolts are removed its already laying on the cradle and can't fall. You might want to let some air out of the tires before sizing up the cradle (drop the truck a couple inches). This way you can put air back in after the bumper is unbolted, laying in the cradle, and lift the truck up to help clear the bumper to frame and slide it out. Jacking the truck rear up would do the same thing as airing the tires back up, maybe even better if you have 2 jacks.

Use a floor jack to lift up on it, and relieve the tension of the weight on the bolts.
And yes, if you’re doing it yourself make a cradle to catch it, if it falls.
It’s not that it’s real heavy, but the awkward position of it, and not knowing when it will release that is the issue

If you have one use a floor jack like was suggested. Get two friends to hold each side while you remove the bolts. Slide out and let it down gently as your helpers balance it as it comes down. It is heavy enough to ruin your day!

Re: How much does this rear bumper weigh? Removal...

Ok.. be careful for sure, but, i just removed this type of bumper , actually had the dealer etched in it and looked just like that one, it was not heavy, and def not 100 lbs.. it was on a 67 c20.. I just put something under and reached from each side one at a time once the bolts were loose and used a impact and it was not hard for me alone.. i then lifted it up and stood it against the wall and was able to completely lift it no sweat by myself.. So its not like really light, but it is not and anchor which is what it looks like..

This bumper weighed about 50# without the receiver which I added on after I had removed it and painted it. More awkward than heavy

I have the same D&D bumper on mine and it is in the 50-75lb range. I mounted mine by myself using a floor jack under the hitch plate—it’ll balance.

I assume there is a dealer name stamped into that bumper, but I’m not able to read it. Mine is from a dealer in Hearne that moved away long ago.

Floor jacks are good, ATV/Quad jacks are awesome for bumpers and axles! But I’ll be honest, I usually lay under them and use blocks and my arms/legs as I am a sucker for bruises! You’d think after 3 back surgeries I’d do it the right way more often!

Re: How much does this rear bumper weigh? Removal...

Just did this myself in a cramped garage. It's really not bad. My tow bar was worse. I used a floor jack under one side. I first removed one bolt from each side, and left the other loose. I then set up the jack and removed the bolt from that side. I think I then lowered it a bit, and then removed the last bolt and supported itb as it lowered. It's probably about 35lbs. I thought it would be heavier and more awkward than it was.

There are probably different versions of the bumper, but mine was a 67 c20 custom camper.

Tie some rope to each end of the bumper and hang it through the tail gate. Slam the tailgate shut. But the best way is with a floor jack under the middle and hold the weight of it.
Work from the side of the truck when under it. The rope will keep it in place until you get the bolts out. Then pull it out once your done.

Get out and drive the truck this summer and have some fun!
It sucks not being able to hear!

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Re: How much does this rear bumper weigh? Removal...

I removed, blasted, repainted and reinstalled this one last summer. The bumper was mounted to the frame by four bolts. I removed the back ones on both sides, loosen the front ones and it just pivoted down on the two remaining ones. Overall not a big deal to remove it. Instillation was the reverse. A friend would make the job much easier.
