Interior Door Lock Handle

Can anyone explain how these doors are supposed to work?

The lever inside the cab has a lock position, neutral position and an open position. If I close the door with the handle in the lock position I cannot unlock it from outside. However, if I close the door in the neutral position, I can open the door or lock it from the outside.

Shouldn’t I be able to unlock the door from the outside?

My keys are matched on both door locks. Thanks Leon! (Lock Doc)

Also, how is the handle supposed to be oriented?

Thanks!

Re: Interior Door Lock Handle

Dunno. My 64 with the handle in the lock position and the door open will not stay locked when I close the door.

Re: Interior Door Lock Handle

Going from memory on my custom comfort-equipped 65:
passenger side handle: down for lock, middle neutral, up to open

I think you use the key to lock it from the outside.

Re: Interior Door Lock Handle

For orientation, on my 63 C50 the handles on both doors point pretty much straight down in their normal unlocked/unopened resting position. Maybe someone else can chime in but I don’t think the handles have ever been rotated.
Might be so nothing on your person can get caught when in a hurry on the way out the door

Re: Interior Door Lock Handle

The lock cylinder on the outside of the truck is independent of the door handle on the inside. So yes, if you lock the truck from the inside with the handle, you're not going to be able to unlock using the key from the outside. As I recall, stock C-10s of this generation shipped from the factory with just a lock cylinder on the drivers side, so the passenger side could only be locked from the inside.

Unless you ordered the Custom Comfort option, which gave you the nice seat, the passenger visor and armrest, and the passenger exterior lock. It's all in the brochure.

Re: Interior Door Lock Handle

So, if you move the door handle to the lock position and close the door, you cannot unlock it? That is effin ridiculous.

Yup, but that's how it was back then. I always lock my doors, but do it from the outside with the key. I've closed the door with it locked from the inside once and that was not fun. Only got back in because the vent window handle was broken and I could reach in enough to open the door

You unlock the driver's door, reach over, and unlock the passenger side. Like others, I just lock/unlock mine from outside. It can be convenient, though, if you think about it. You're in the truck. You park somewhere. You only have to simply reach over, flip the handle down, and the passenger side is locked. No need to walk around and use the key. Not so effin ridiculous, IMO...

Re: Interior Door Lock Handle

I thought the lock in the button was on the passenger door... because everyone exited the vehicle from the passenger door. Just watch an old television series from the 50's or 60's... they all got out on the passenger side.

Re: Interior Door Lock Handle

I get what you guys are saying, but I could see my GF locking herself out, or me. Guess she can’t drive the truck by herself.

Only if she locks the keys inside, just like every other vehicle...

The keys don’t matter, if you lock it from the inside, you cannot unlock it with the key. That’s the thing I don’t like about it.

Re: Interior Door Lock Handle

Mr. Hat, I have a '64 and a '66. I just went out and opened every door and pushed the handles to the lock postion, then shut the doors. ( windows down of course.) On 3 out of the 4 doors the handle snapped back to the unlock position when the latch hit the striker. I can only assume the one that didn't must have a problem of some kind. Edit: also when reaching in thru the window and locking the interior handle on a closed door, I am still able to lock the pushbutton on the exterior handle on every door.

Ok. Maybe something is wrong with my latch mechanism.

1. What orientation are your door handles? 6 o’clock?
2. Even though you are able to lock the push button on a locked door, it still won’t open when unlocked, will it?

Re: Interior Door Lock Handle

I pointed my handles at the two o'clock position because I'm pretty tall and I just wanted the dang thing up and away from my knee. And correct, the door will not open until the interior handle is unlocked. Conversely though, I can reach over and open the passenger door when the button is locked.

Theoretically, a person could double lock the passenger's side door but here's my thinking on that: If I have a passenger, I won't just reach over and pop it open for them and leave the button locked during driving because If I were to crash, I would want any potential rescue party to be able to open the door from the outside. Something about the idea of my wife being trapped unconscious inside while rescuers yank fruitlessly on the door.
The only time I would even lock an inside handle is when parked and sitting inside.

Yes, you use the driver's side.

Re: Interior Door Lock Handle

I think I get what you guys are saying; so, bottom line, the key won’t make any difference if it was locked from the inside.
