My latest project

Last couple evenings I have been making side boards for my flatbed. I still have to finish the board for the rear of the bed and modify the stakes that will be at the front of the bed.

I counter-sunk the inside of the board so the bolts and nuts are flush with the inside of the board and I am very happy with how that turned out. Broke out a cigar while I was doing the work and before I knew it, it was midnight. Hopefully I will finish the back board tonight. I need to run over to a friend's to do the last cut as I don't have a radial arm saw and I suck at using a skill saw.

And here's a pic of where the front stake will go into the steel pocket. Makes it very stable.

I will be building similar ones for mine too. You did a great job on those rails Yukon!!! Just adds to the whole toughness thing that truck of yours has goin' on. Mine is gonna look like a junior 72 compared to that monster.

Update: The bed is being removed on Monday and construction of the flatbed will start on Tuesday

Lookin' good, and no more worries about stuff sliding off the bed. I like whole setup, hope to get something similar one ot these days. By the way, there is a truck/car show down here in Winfield on Sunday, June 23rd, at the fairgrounds. Come down and visit, I'll have the truck there unless something bad happens between now and then. It would be nice to meet you in person.

I used treated lumber so I should be fine on the weather issued.

Barn9 - I will make a real effort to make it. I check my calendar tonight to see how it looks. Would be great to meet you. You ought to post a separate topic letting the nearby memebers know about it - we have quite a few in the area now.

As far as the multiple pics, I just did the old [ img ] mysite [ /img ] link and it works fine for me. On the 4x4 site though when I try it only gives a link and doesn't show the pics. Strange. Also, are other people getting e-mail notifications on your messages? I've got mine set up to do so, but I'm getting no notifications.

Hey, good to hear from you. I am supposed to get my entry form today or tomorrow, and then I'll have some more details to post. I didn't have the e-mail box checked, but I do now, so I'll see if it works if you give me a reply. The guy that is starting this show is a 20 year vet of Tumbleweeds car club in Ark City, and he dicided to start one here in Winfield because we have the fairgrounds, which is a far better location for a car show. Also, he wanted to have a show for the truck guys to be a bigger part of, which is great. His plan is that this will be the first of an annual event. It's just going to be a 1 day show, so I'm not sure how the turnout will be. On the plus side, he travels to a lot of car shows with his T-shirt business, so he knows a lot of people in this part of the country. I'll get the info posted just as soon as I get the details. Cya!

The guy who is going to help me swap my tranny is maybe available on June 22 - if so I sure hope we get it done. I would hate to be able to come up on Sunday but not be able to drive my truck. Will be looking forward to the details.

Mike C - My flatbed trailer is really tall - I told my wife that's why I had to lift my truck - to make it line up with the trailer . . . they don't make drop hitches that I could have turned over, yea that's it. I actually do need to flip the hitch bar so the ball is about one inch lower to make the trailer sit right. Now if I was pulling a horse trailer or a normal height trailer I definitely need a real drop hitch.

Racedvl - I had the bed custom built - had modifications done to the standard flat beds that a local company, Bradtech, sells. I had the lights added in the headache rack, louvers with the center cut out for a slider window (got to get one someday), higher gussets that tie the headache rack to the bed (going to have a custom gas tank built that will be on top of the bed and follow the lines of the gussets), different brake and backup lights, treadplate for rear apron, and then I whimped out and let them install the receiver hitch. Was going to do that myself then decided to go the easy route and get it done all at one time.

Thanks for the great comments - Friday afternoon I went and got a load of sand and it sure was helpful having those side boards. Full dozer bucket of sand squated the truck down a bit. (Pics, of course I took a pic) The truckin front of me was a little Sonoma. Had ground effects that went over the wheel wells. Was kinda fun watching it nearly hit the ground when the dozer operator dropped that load of sand. I was about a 1/2 mile from the sand pit and looked over at a turn out and that guy was standing next to his Sonoma. I stopped and he said the tires were rubbing real bad. Offered to help him push some of the sand off, he said he was just going to go very slow. Poor guy, bet he didn't make it very far.

LOL! Fortunately steel flat beds are a lot cheaper than lift hitches so you didn't have to go that way
