Fillin the gas tank

Just thought I'd share: I, like many others with 73-87's, have problems filling my gas tank correctly. On both my truck its always taken me sitting there holding the filler the entire time, just just the tip in and pointed strait down as much as possable. Such a pain.

The other day my friend put the filler in, only puts the tip in, but then leaves it hanging and puts it on auto easy pump. Not only did it pump, but it let the truck take almost 2 gallons more then it ever has.

Anyone else have some neat trick to get it to fill easier? Anyone know why our trucks are like this?

For some reason, my truck only does this in WINTER. Why I don't know. The nozzles with the rubber acorian covers DO NOT work on these trucks. I have to go to stations that have the straight metal nozzle. I can empty a tank and I still only get 14 gallons in it.

My truck did that shortly after I had a wreck. Upon removal of the tank to replace the sender I found that the vent tube had broken off of the tank. (the one which vents back into the filler neck) When I fixed it with some JB weld, the problem went away. Just something to check.

its because of the 90 degree bend and the almost flat secion into the tank

Same here Tyler, ONLY the ones WITHOUT the rubber boot work, and the MOST I can ever get in, is 14 gallons. Usually, the only place that has the metal tube only are shell which is the HIGHEST.

Beacon (names now changed to Valero) has the metal nozzles and are cheap.

I run my 16 gallon tanks dry and get just over 15 in mine. If I don't watch it sometimes a little gas will splash out also, but I can stick mine about half-way in and lock the handle and leave it hanging and it will work fine.

I don't have this problem. Oregon has a no pump law meaning that you can't pump your own gas. But it never fails that they put the nozzle in, set it for auto fill, walk off, and 5 seconds later it clicks off. I can always tell the guys that own older chevies. They're the ones that put just the tip of the nozzle in so the gas flows smoothly without backing up against the fill tube.

I can never leave the nozzle alone, I have to hold it sideways and forget about using the auto-fill lever. Could it be because I have a stepside? And the two times that I've run out of gas, I filled up with 12 gallons??? I know that is weird for having a 16 gallon tank!

When I got my '86, the gas tank had a leak in it. I bought a 20 gallon tank, and used the original filler neck with no problems. I don't know if the venting is different because it's a bigger tank, but even with the gas nozzles with the rubber covers, I had no problems at all.

Alot of the times it wont shut off for me, spraying gas out everywhere. Then if both tanks are dry, trying to turn the truck around to get to the empty tank. Most of the pumps around here wont let you fill up again using the same credit card, so you have to ask someone to hold the nozzle for you when you make the u turn around.

I normally just fill one tank up at a time on my truck, unless i'm going on a long trip, too much hassle to fill both up at once for me and if i'm by myself is hard to find somebody willing to hold it for ya.

With the price of gas now days you have to be rich to fill both tanks of gas at one time.
