Sidepipes

Having some idea issues with what to do regarding my exhaust system some say straight pipe all the way out the back, some say blacked out side pipes I've got a 67 short box Stepside I wonder how that would look any ideas out there someone else suggested right where the step is cut that bottom lip out and put rectangle NASCAR exhaust tip there any pictures out there Any input would be appreciated motor is a 355 long tube header

Side pipes on a 60’s vette is perfect, on a truck not so much for me. Side exit right under the rear step though, that I’m into. I prefer my exhaust round or oval as opposed to square or rectangle. I don’t know how low your truck is but unless ground clearance is an issue I probably wouldn’t cut into the step at all. Enough of my opinion, do what you like and since you asked for pics

I’d personally prefer something like a 5 inch oval at a 45 degree angle to the longer slimmer NASCAR look of this but to each their own.

I spent alot of time looking for the perfect/best looking side pipes for a car project of mine many years ago and could find nothing as classy as the late 60's Vette pipes (as Overdriven mentions). All other aftermarket pipes just looked chintzy in comparison. The old Thrush pipes were second in line, but hard to find and just did not have the pizazz. I got lucky and found a set of 67 Vette covers and baffles that someone had drilled holes in to fasten the fiber baffles. This ruined the value to a Vette lover and I got them cheap ($150). I managed to have mufflers mounted under the car and the tail pipe exited just beyond the cover with a SS tip. I got the best of both worlds...the side pipe look and some sound control. They are still louder than I'd like, but nothing like standard side pipes. My truck will get the largest quietest mufflers and exit the rear, however. I'm going for the old Pontiac Turbo Muffler sound. Side pipes give off an cam lope sound due to the right or left back of cylinders being mostly heard from that side. It adds to the hotrod sound effects of the vehicle without overdoing the cam to get it. I assume a H or X pipe would diminish that to a certain degree.

I couldn't find it but there was a thread on here sometime over the past several years where a guy did what you're talking about with the nascar style exhaust exit right under his step.

I spent several minutes digging on the search function but had no luck. What I recall is that he fabricated an exhaust "tip" that was thin ( maybe just over an inch thick ) and long ( maybe 8 inches ) and rested under the step of his stepper and it looked real sharp.

Maybe someone else will have that thread marked or saved?
