I had mine sandblasted and then painted with Chassis Saver in satin black. Sandblasting is the preferred prep for that coating and it is very sticky stuff and has held up well to all kinds of chemicals and can be touched up with a brush. It's a 1-component product so it doesn't dry quite as fast as 2-part products, but it's pretty easy to apply and sticks to rust as well.
