Stock bench seat storage

So I like my stock bench for now. I have my ride tech valves behind it, took out the gas tank and put it in the back. But the air suspension takes up a fair amount of space. I want to put a stereo in the truck but dont want to cut up the stock dash to put one in. I was thinking about putting one under my seat, while I was looking at it, has anybody cut the front bottom (metal) part of their bench out and weld on a hinge of some sort? Im thinking if I do this I can put the stereo under the drivers side, put a speaker or 2 behind the seat and then 1 speaker in the dash behind the grill. This would still leave some space on the passenger side to keep flares spare qt of oil etc.

Re: Stock bench seat storage

The wall on the right side is what I'm thinking about cutting out. This is the radio/receiver.

Re: Stock bench seat storage

You can use a Bluetooth amp, no head unit needed. Then you don't need to cut a hole.

It's also easy to mount some 6x9's in the corners next to the seat. Someone on this forum makes metal brackets, or make your own out of wood.

Re: Stock bench seat storage

I cut out the entire front panel on the seat so i can have an access panel. I think Im going to build a box to hold the receiver. I like that amp, but my dad already bought this one from Frys and since they are out of business I cant return it. I do like those rear panels.

Re: Stock bench seat storage

I'm inclined to like hanging the head unit under the dash and having a flip down cover for it. I've been figuring a bracket that swings the head unit up out of sight when you don't want it to show would be slick if you had room under the dash.

On the other hand my buddy could have just as well put the whole head unit under the seat, set the station, set the volume and put a toggle switch for on and off under the dash and life would have been wonderful as far as he was concerned. He played his music on one station only and played it loud. If you rode in his truck (s) with him there was no conversation as the radio was too loud to be able to talk. He played the shop radio louder so he could hear it over the air compresser.

The only issue with the controls of the radio sticking out down low like that is if happen to change stations on a regular basis is that you may have to fumble for the presets for a while until you get used to it.

Remembering that when I had the stock seat and seat base in my 48 I had that area so full of stuff it was unreal. Kept a jack, tool bag, and a bunch of other stuff under there.

Re: Stock bench seat storage

They make some pretty good hidden antennas now.

On the other hand it sounds that as long as you can reach the volume knob you are good.

Put mine there using one of those mounting systems that lets them hang from cab. Mine is just a cheapie am/fm/sd that uses a line of sight remote that doesnt work with glove box door closed. Bought an extender and that went on dash and works well.

Re: Stock bench seat storage

Our choices for what amounts to a sound system in our trucks is probably one of those things that we are the furtherst apart on what we need for a sound system.

Simply meaning some of us can get by with the most basic AM-FM radio as long as it gets our favorite station and we can hear the speakers driving down the road.

Others need a thousand watt amp, 12 speakers that they spent 50 hours researching and a head unit that will do everything except tell the faucet to fill the dog's water bowl.

Then there are those of us somewhere in between that just need a head unit and sound system that will give us decent sound, let us use our blue tooth device and may or may not have a few nifty extra features but at least our buddies say it sounds good.

I bought a blue tooth thing that you plug into the lighter or power port the other day that can run the phone or a a usb stick through a fm channel . I haven't tested that thing in the daily yet but it would let folks to run their phone or storage stick though a pretty well basic radio.

I'm some where in the middle. I don't mind listening to the engine for an hour or 2 but I wouldn't say no to some tunes either. My dad will my dad wants music and he's going deaf in his old age so it needs to be loud enough for him to hear. But you won't see big subs or anything super fancy in this truck.

High quality sound systems are wondeful nowadays and are great when parked. Not so much when driving. Having had mine since 4 tracks were the rage i have learned that road, wind, and engine noise on the road with ADs are a real factor. I thought by adding tons of insulation it would help but still sounds like "oil drum accoustics".

Re: Stock bench seat storage

I mounted the stereo in my "49 behind the center grill. put a hinge on the bottom of the grill and 2 magnets on the top of the grill. the remote still works thru the vents and I still have a glove box. winner, winner chicken dinner!!!

Crap. I put 2 rolls of peel and seal and was going to put another roll into it. As well. I started patching some of the holes in the floor where the old parking brake was.
