Solutions to clean a steering wheel

last night a guy gave me a steering wheel out of a 70's model camaro and it has this black sticky stuff on it and i would like some ideas on how to clean it off as its rather unsightly.also its tan in color so are there any products out there to dye steering wheels a different color or is it not worth and would it just be easier to buy a black steering wheel.

Use some simple green or wheel cleaner. The black crap is dead skin.... and crap from everybodys hands that has ever grabbed the steering wheel.

Also try some wax and grease remover for painting if the other stuff dosn't do it.
That sounds so gross, and I've seen it . You just don't know what was on there :p

there was something wierd about steering wheels in the '70's.. they all get this GROSS sticky substance covering them when they sit in a hot vehicle for a while. I dont know how or why but I know its gross and plagues all the 70's steering wheels especially the big round truck wheels. But you guys beat me to it, simple green works well

yeah the simple green worked great-had it clean in no time flat.the guy who gave me the steering had it stored in his hot storage room for i dont know how long and it was in a plastic grocery bag-the bag had covered it so long it had turned from white to black-quite nasty indeed.now if i could just get a reply regarding a product to dye it black. anyone out there got any ideas thoughts or suggestions

And just about any auto parts store will carry several types of vinyl dye's just make shure you use the primer/cleaner after using simple green i highly reccomend it or it may not stick.

I got it at a auto paint supply store. I had it on a wheel for 4 years maybe. Keys or fingernails will gouge it when its fresh. Also the club took a bunch off mine. Seemed to hold up ok to normal wear. Has to be perfectly clean before you spray.
