Horn repairs

Does anybody know if there is someone who can rebuild or fix a horn? I've got two sets of high and low horns, one set makes some tone and the other one doesn't make any noise at all. I was wondering if there's anybody here that rebuilds them

Re: Horn repairs

I haven't used this guy, but he's recommended on the NCRS Corvette forum. Likely concours level, and not cheap.

Another alternative is to locate nice used originals, or even NOS. Problem with NOS horns is that even with the proper part number, GM supplied a correct horn body, but the mounting brackets supplied in the box were somewhat universal, and were attached by a large single nut onto a spot welded threaded boss. These horns can be used if you carefully drill the spot welds holding the bracket to the old horn, then drill the spot welds holding the threaded boss on the NOS horn, and finally weld the old bracket to the NOS horn. I just did this for my 1970 Blazer. I could not find any good used high note horns, but an NOS high note appeared.

Part numbers for your reference:

High note 9000011

Low note 9000235

Re: Horn repairs

My base 1970 Truck has only one horn.
If you moved up in trim packages did you get another horn?

I have used "The Horn Works" before and was very pleased with the results.

Since I used them the business has sold. I expect you will get the same great service from the new owner.

I just pulled my C10 horn apart and found no continuity at the points.
I filed them and the horn worked afterwards but sounded like a constipated duck.
I have a couple others here that I will use. I am not looking to build an all original truck.

Re: Horn repairs

All trucks had the low note horn mounted next to the radiator. Some lower trim level trucks had dual horns as a separate option, or part of Cheyenne/CST packages.

I'm not sure which year high trim level trucks had the high note horn as standard, but my '69 CST did not come with one.

Have you tried soaking the inside of the horns with WD40? Supposed to work sometimes to revive a dead horn. Spray very liberally & let it soak at least overnight.

My 1970 CST Blazer has the dual horns, as does my 1972 Cheyenne Super.

Re: Horn repairs

Where is the second horn located?
I was just looking at a 1972 Cheyenne Super with only one horn.
I never have read where a second horn was included in the Cheyenne package.
Doesn't mean it's not true though.

About 30 years ago, I added a high horn, but there was no provision for mounting it. I drilled a hole in the core support near where I'd seen high note horns mounted. When I restored the truck, I used an original core support from a '71 or '72 which had a hole with a weld nut on the front side which allows the horn to be mounted on the engine side.

Here's a picture showing the correct horn location. Note that at least early '69s still had the washer bottles mounted on the core support.

Re: Horn repairs

Here's a poor picture that shows the high horn bracket location. If you look closely you can see there is also a small rectangular hole for the tab at the end of the horn bracket.

That’s what I did on an apparently dead high note horn - works like a champ now!
