292 Help

I bought a truck a few years ago with what I was told was a totally rebuilt 292 block installed. But it was rebuilt 30 years ago. It has been painted and taped over all the holes. The truck came with a box of parts but very few engine parts. I think I have an intake manifold and an exhaust manifold and perhaps a correct pulley but that is all. Any suggestions for what this engine is supposed to look like and where is a good place to be buying all the needed 292 parts for it. For example there is no carb or distributor, etc. I think I may be able to find an old 292 in a local truck sitting in a field locally, but that is now my only source of info other than looking at photos on this site.

Re: 292 Help

There are many older posts on the forum that will have info and pictures that will help you. There are some parts that also fit the 250 inline, such as the distributor. Points distributor and '75-up HEI. Some aftermarket parts for the 250/292 such as HEI, Aluminum intake, tube headers are available.
292 water pump and by-pass hose are available from your FLAPS, but the 292 thermostat housing will have to be sourced used from who knows where.
This thread is one of many you will find to get you going.

Re: 292 Help

The carb. from a 250 will fit but has smaller pasagways. You will leave power on the table. A 292 carb is hard to find as the reman places mix them all up. The manifolds will work OK .

Hello Grumpy, I just went through the bins that came with this truck and found this part that looks like the base for a thermostat, but it does not look like any of the ones you posted on a previous thread about 292 engines. Can you help me identify this? There is even a part number on it. It looks like 3789160. I too would be interested in parts you have for sale for this engine. Thanks, george

I'll take some more pictures and part #'s today . and post them up later today .

So many of the 6 cyl engines from our trucks have been pulled and scraped it's getting harder to find these parts .

Thanks Grumpy. This is getting interesting. It makes me wonder why this part came with the engine. And it also makes me wonder if the engine is original to this truck. Time will tell. The guy who did this engine work is dead so I cannot ask about it. You are a good help.

Re: 292 Help

I rebuilt a 292 and dropped it into a GMC 1500 . Boy what a stump puller. It ate engine mounts from all the torque. Lots of fun at shows compared to all the V8’s...good luck.with your build..Jack

If you have a legible SPID on the glovebox door, the RPO code ''L25'' means a 292 L6 option.
