Question '90 Burb slop in steering-any ideas?

Hi,

I have a 1990 Suburban 3/4 ton with a two inch lift, new shocks, 15 x 8 wheels, 33" tires. Several shops have been consulted and all report alignment is within spec and all linkages are aok..."they're just like that" is typical of the shrugging responses I get.

I have driven other Burbs and while they are not sports cars, they shouldn't have a 1/3 turn of the steering wheel in slop.

Any ideas: when all looks ok, what might it be?

thanks

John

You didn't state if yours was 4x4 or not. I have a 91 4x4 Suburban and it does not have the same problem. It steers tight and smooth. So I would venture to say your steering gear box needs adjustment or needs replacement.

if it's a 4x4 then go to www.offroaddesign.com and get the steering brace. Have somebody saw the steering wheel back and forth while you watch the box. It will get rid of most of that flex. This is also the way to check for crackes wherer the box bolts to the fram.

With any lift the Sway disconnects and correction also improves ride and helps with bump steer. Check all ball joints and Tierod ends. The rod end on the drag link on the box side tends to eat it quick because it gets water in it.
