Steering box

My son has tentatively decided his next project will be to replace the old leaky steering box in his 69. I don't know what it is, but it seems to have a lot of turns in it lock to lock. He works at Oreilly's, so my guess is he will look there first. Any suggestions as to what he should look for? He has a power steering setup, so he might be looking for a new pump as well as lines too. Not sure, I haven't talked to him yet about it. I would like to see him get something a little tighter, but I don't know anything about any of this stuff.

Any info is appreciated.

Dino

Re: Steering box

The Lares 1075 is what I'm looking at for my 68. It's a 2WD power steering gear with the tighter ratio.

Alternate OEM p/n's listed as: 277501, 5020109. I will probably pick up the rag joint too. I've given myself a headache trying to figure out input shaft diameters & spline counts on these things.

Check out Red Head, they have a great reputation. You can either buy one or have them rebuild yours. They can can do quick-ratio as well. https://redheadsteeringgears.com/

I will second Red Head Steering. I have used two of their boxes so far and figure I will be purchasing a third eventually. Go to their website they go a little further than most doing a rebuild.
