Re: What color is this?

I was told 4001 code means special order paint because my 72 has no paint codes on the spid or the build sheet just 4001db Mine turned out to be Placer gold /white

Re: What color is this?

I couldn't read it on the larger size image, what year truck is it?

It looks very close to saddle but if it is a '69 or '70 model, maybe one of the poly-metalic colors?

Sorry, never mind, I see that you posted it is for a 1972 suburban. I would say it is a saddle color.

Re: What color is this?

Looks to be the same color as Mark's (72c20customcamper) '68 step side.

Could be, code 525 saddle fawn

But with no code listed it could be any color. Do you have the truck in your possession? If so have a jobber gun it . It will tell you the color that’s how I found out my 72 was a car color

Re: What color is this?

If you look closely at his SPID in the blow-up attachment, you'll see ''4001PC'' as the last entry in the left hand column.
In Post 3, 72c20customcamper said he has an RPO code 4001db on a build sheet for ''special paint'' which was Placer Gold/White.
GM dropped "Fawn" as a paint name after MY 1968.

CG -- you could probably get that ''6-2-1084'' Magic Marker ink up with alcohol. Just be very careful not to get too close to the SPID lettering.

Re: What color is this?

Well I didn't write it down so I've already forgotten (sigh) I was at a buddies house today and he had this step side visiting. Its earlier than a 72 (maybe 69? I didn't write that down either) anyway he had a paint chart and the color was on there ... Maybe the placer gold, I know poly was a part of the name. Here is the ash tray out of the burb balanced on the step side ... Pretty close, I think the stepper has been repainted.

Placer gold was a very yellow gold . Not close to the Saddle fawn at all .

You're correct, not even close =), I need to write things down.

If we saw the grille, we'd know the year. But OK Placer Gold is a brighter yellow.
''Poly'' [I think] meant metallic in GM PaintSpeak.
So ''Saddle Fawn Poly'' if '68 or earlier, or Saddle Poly if later. That's what it looks like to me.

You have too many good choices for projects
I gotta tell ya though, I would cheer on your resto of the 72. There was a 71 SS454 in Placer Gold running around my home town growing up - I’ve always thought it was one of the best colors GM ever offered. So rare on a truck, I think it would be a stunner.

Re: What color is this?

Same as my stepper. Poly is the metallic and it’s loaded with it to the point it’s hard to spray.

This is a spot on the 72’s hood that peeled away revealing the Placer Gold

I didn’t see your post till now . It would look great with the Placer and white but life gets in the way . The stepper resto has stalled because the wife’s Tacoma rear went and I’m doing that and the oil pan on my CTD rotted away again. I had Replaced it 7 years ago and had the new one blasted and powder coated inside and out.

But I think my wife would be upset . She says the trucks like me presentable but rough around the edges and she likes it like that.

I bet if you hit that with a pressure washer the ochre would come off like peeling an onion.
