Just wondering what paint or method is the best for a driver and show vehicle? Powder coating seems not to be in my area so is it worth it to travel for it or do something else? I want it to look great for a very long time! I only want to do this once! Thanks

I powder coat for a hobby and extra money. If you want to spend about $450 to $600 for powder coated frame you can. Make sure you take it to a very reputable shop, so they don't mess up the coat job (I have heard horror stories about some shops).
I haven't heard of powder coat having a problem with direct sunlight, only for things that are considered high temp (anything over 400 degrees for normal coat and 1200 for high temp coat). Some coats you need to clear coat over them, if you don’t they get spots on them. For my stepside I used Eastwood's "PARTIAL CHASSIS RESTORATION KIT ORIGINAL" I took my bed, rear suspension off, and when my engine was out I did that too. I wire wheeled the frame making it free from rust or any type of foreign material. Then I used a paintbrush painted on the rust ecapsulator, let that dry and then painted my frame with their chassis paint. From my cab back and in the engine compartment it looks really nice plus I get comments on how nice it looks! To me that was the most cost effective way to do it. Plus I don' t have to strip the whole truck, I can do it piece at a time. The only thing I have left to do is where the cab sits. I will do that eventually and then my truck frame will be fully coated. http://www.eastwoodco.com/cgi-bin/sgin0101.exe

Sorry didn't mention how durable it is. I made little hooks to do small pieces. If you take a coated hook you can bend the metal so one end touches the other and the coat will not chip or crack. You can take a piece of metal and smack something the coat will bend with it. I did a battery tray for a guy and he dropped it, only to see it didn't chip scratch or peel. He is now a customer that can explain how durable it is.

If you can get a reputable shop to do it for $600.00 or less then I would powdercoat it. You can even powdercoat it to close to the color you are going to paint it if you want.Later......JB
