FYI brake drum issues

One of my last winter projects on my 65 C10 was to rebuild the stock brake system with all new parts. I purchased 4 new drums from Rock Auto (2 being Bendix and 2 were Raybestos) made in China of coarse. On my first test drive this spring, I noticed a pulsation when braking. I drove it for a while trying to figure what was wrong, thought maybe a front hub wasn't running true. I decided to have the new drums checked and was told that 3 needed to be cut 4mm and 1 was 5mm to true them up costing another $100 at our local NAPA store. This is just a heads up if you are buying new drums. Maybe buying the drums locally would be an advantage should a problem occur.

Buying locally might, but it might not.

I went through four drums recently for my '77 C10 locally, chasing a vibration issue. All the drums I bought needed weight to balance them, some an offensively large amount of weight. I returned them all, and just balanced the drums I had. (Yes, I balanced my brake drums).

Back when I used to be a mechanic (back when the Dead Sea was only sick), I usually cut brand new rotors before installing them, just to make sure everything was good for the customer. You'd be surprised how garbage the stuff you buy is, regardless of where it comes from.

I had the same issue when I bought some Raybestos drums for my sons 4Runner recently, what a PITA.

I just redid the rear brakes on my 65 C10 and bought some AC Delco drums off Amazon for $36ea with free prime shipping and had no problem with them. Not sure if I got lucky or if the AC Delco parts are just better quality?
