th400 problems...have question

last night i was going up the highway and all the sudden i hear this loud whining noise, i pulled over right away and as soon as i stop moving it goes away, i checked all the fluid levels in the truck and they were fine, when i pulled back onto the highway the noise was gone, then again on the way home it did it again, i is pretty loud, this time i put it in neutral and after a couple of seconds it was gone, put it back in gear and drove straight home, so it did it 2 times...what could this be? do i need a new torque converter possibly? i dont know much about these transmissions, im still learning all this fun stuff, could someone help me figure out this problem? thanks in advance

possibly a stopped up screen? when is the last time you did a fluid and filter change on it? if the screen is stopped up it will make a loud whinning ( where is the spell check when i need it?) noise. i would think about that first.

i wouldn't drive it at all unless i could help it. i burned up a turbo 400 once before like that. if you have to do as you did before and drive it and stop it as soon as it starts. limp it to the nearest transmission shop, or change it yourself if you are able to.

yes i am able to do the filter and fluid, you figure thats all it is? what is making the noise that i hear? and why is it happening? because the filter is clogged it isnt getting any fluid?

if the filter is clogged or getting cloged it is limiting the fluid to the pump. the squeal is the pump with little to no fluid! the pump will go and then the torque convertor will get burned up and then that is that!

thanks 7gmc2, ill get the ramps at work tomorrow so i can get under the damn truck and drop the pan and get that filter out, it sure would be nice to have a plug in that pan..
oh--do you or anyone else know anything about those tranny pans that have tubes going though them lengthways and air travels though and cools the fluid, a friend has one and he said i could have it but should i even bother, its just a weekend cruiser nothing fancy..
