3/4 ton and one ton spring differences
Curious if anyone knows the difference between 3/4 ton and one ton rear spring packs.
Are the springs the same length and width? Do the one tons just have more leaves? My one ton has what appears to be an extra leaf pack. That may be stock on all one tons though. Ex motor home.

 Extra leaf pack *sounds like* overloads. The ends will contact frame-mounted pads when enough weight is added. Not sure but I don't think they came on 3/4 tons. Years ago I looked (unsuccessfully) for a set to add to my K20. I ended up with Hellwig overloads instead.

Correct I believe they are called overloads, just unsure if they were on all one tons. I had overloads on a 71 K20, but dont remember what style they were. Possibly like the ones you put on your truck.

First of all I learned that the spring packs changed mid-generation. I think the 68 and older trucks had a different number of springs.
I do not have experience with their lengths or the individual spring rates of each leaf(meaning that they simply threw a couple extra leafs on for 1 tons; or if the entire spring pack was a completely different design) I believe the extra leaf pack you may have could be the auxiliary springs on the earlier trucks, someone deleted the aux spring from my '72 1 ton SRW and according to a website my aux would have only been a single spring. I have a 70 c30 dump bed that has over load springs. I pulled the rear end out with the leaves still attached so I can grab a pic or take any measurements that you want. I can't help on the c20. I have a 72 K20 but it has a 4" lift. The springs from a 73 up fit that truck.
As far as the spring Change over goes I bet it was when disc breaks came out and GM did the re-engineer at one time. Make all the changes to the line and only have it done once. ***I updated this since the C30 does have over load springs*** Last edited by burnin oil; 09-21-2021 at 02:39 PM. |
