67 turn signal switch removal

I’m trying to replace the turn signal switch in my 67 c20 and need some help.

The hazard switch doesn’t have a screw securing it like in the later trucks.

While I’m in here I should replace the bearing too. Pretty sloppy. Any advice would be appreciated!

Remove the screw holding the turn signal lever and remove the lever, then remove the 3 screws holding the switch. I believe you should be able to maneuver the switch out of there. Remove the cover plate under the dash, it is held by 2 phillips screws to the under side of the dash. Pull the wire cover plate off the tangs that hold it in place and slide it through the rubber grommet. Unplug the plug under the dash. It has locking clips on either side, I recommend be careful not to break the clips.

On my steering column, I removed the shift lever pin and shift lever, then unscrewed more screws and loosened the shifter cup or housing, and that allowed me to pull the cable up through there and put the new one in, but I can't say I recommend that because I don't quite know how to describe putting that back together and get the shifter working again. I studied it and messed with it and think I got lucky. I actually took it loose again, and messed with it some more to see if I could document my method and learn something, but I didn't and I just got lucky to get it back together again.

Some people release the pins from the C-connector, so the wires will just pull through unobstructed. That is probably what I'll do next time I need to deal with it. Take a picture so you know which wire color to put in which connector spot when putting it back together.

I recommend don't throw away the old turn signal switch, I understand they can be rebuilt. I tossed mine before I knew that.

I have the three special screws out and the switch is loose, I don't see how the switch comes out because the Hazard switch is slotted in the housing.

In the picture there is a rusty housing that the switch sits in, does that whole assembly slide out off the column?

I found on another post you have to press the hazard button in to gain clearance in order to angle it up and out

The switch is attached to the aluminum piece that houses the bearing. This aluminum piece is engaged with the end of the main tube of the steering column and usually requires a bit of persuasion to detach. I usually insert a screwdriver into one of the screw holes and rock it gently. The aluminum piece and turn signal switch will come out of the housing together at an angle, as djlambert described, and can be separated afterward.

It is normal for the bearing to feel loose when the steering wheel is removed, as it isn't loaded at all. This is a good opportunity to squeeze some fresh grease into it.

Thanks for the removal steps. I got everything out and cleaned. I checked continuity on all wires and switch is still good.

Add some new grease to the bearing and reassemble everything.
