did 64 have factory powersteering?

I have a 64 with powersteering I bought the truck for parts and I noticed it had power steering and the box physically looks like my 87 steering box but has a different bolt pattern than the newer boxes so I am assuming it is original? but not sure

the 64 was a slave cylinder type no hoses go into the steering box

The '63-'66's that had factory power steering, were actually power assist steering. The pitman arm attached to a valve assembly which controlled a hydraulic cylinder attached to a bracket off of the back of the steering box, and to the draglink. This is the same setup that was used on the Corvette's for many years. I believe it was used thru the end of the production of the C3's.

I have some of these parts hanging off my truck but not the whole system. I don't think I am going to go to the trouble of trying to get it fixed since I want to eventually slide a 73-87 crossmember in and get power steering and disk brakes. Was this system very good?

My 65 doesnt have a slave cyl. set up. I am pretty sure its original. It only has hoses from pump to steering box. Are you sure all 63-66 had slave cylinders?

yes the factory unit from 63-68 was a slave type unit

I've got one on my 66
Want to convert to the powersteering gear set up because my old one is leaking to much.
As I can see it now I will have to use another steering link/bar because the one now is integrated with the powerslave/pitmanarm unit.
Does anyone know if this is hard to do and which one I can use for the conversion?
Does a 67-72 steering link/bar also fit?

Does anyone know if there's a rebuild kit for the whole slave systeem?
Is it Identical to the C3 corvette setup?

I used the corvette parts they are the same except ffor the hoses . The valve and pump and piston are the same

We use to put a ( shot glass ) full of brake fluid in with the power steering fluid to swell the seals back up....!

But I'am going for the newer after market steering conversion with the 69-87 steering gear( with the 3,5 gear ratio)
Do you know if I can use the same track rod or do I need a standard one
(the ones used without the slave steering power adapters)
If I would need another one which one will fit?
Are there multiple choices to make a search easyer?
Will be rebuilding the old slave powersteering just for fun and keep it so the truck stays complete.

You will need a draglink for a '63-'66 truck if you are going to upgrade to the integral power steering box. The '67+ draglink, I believe has a different size taper for the tierods. This might be a good time to upgrade to disc brakes at the same time. I always recommend using the '73+ steering linkage along with the disc brake upgrade. That way all the steering and suspension is of the same vintage, and easy to remember when asking for replacement parts. plus then you don't need those $$ aftermarket aluminum tierod adapters.

No, the '73+ tierods will not fit the '63-'66 spindles. Yes you can do a complete disc brake swap using '73-'87 C10 components, whether from a wrecking yard or a donor truck from an individual. You do not have to use aftermarket parts for a disc brake conversion. There are a few threads all about this in the '60-'6 FAQ Index found at the top of the page.

Then I don't have to search for a 63-66 track rod for my powersteering conversion.
And maybe I can sell the factory powersteering kit as a Whole to someone how wants to stay original

I'm wondering the same thing because I am replacing my pressure line on my 64 Fleetside and it does connect on the steering box. It does not have the pitman arm attached to a valve assembly which controlled a hydraulic cylinder attached to a bracket off of the back of the steering box, and to the draglink like Captain Fab said so I'm wondering if it is original or was added.

Came with the truck like this when I bought it. Previous owner has since passed so no luck there.
