Is this too far gone?

I stopped by another one of my neighbors today to look at an old ‘72 3/4 ton. He has put it out to pasture literally. He said the 350 locked up many years ago and he’s junked it now.

It appears to have been fairly nicely equipped when new. It’s an automatic and factory AC truck. But it’s a rough long bed truck with not many good panels. I was really hoping this would be a good cab and it’s not bad except this one ugly spot on passenger side above windshield. The drivers door and fender is good, All the glass is pretty good, windshield and rear glass SS Trim is nice. Has a clean clear title in hand.

I can get the truck for less than 500. But can this cab even be fixed or is it not worth it being in such a bad spot?

Have you looked behind the visors and above the windshield inside the cab? It may be bad there too. It would be worth $500 bucks for parts either way.

If the SPID is on the inside of the glove box door see if you can get a picture of it.

I pull the lower vents and look at the ventilation well to get an overview of the cab condition. Of course you can only do that on the drivers side on an air truck. Last one I looked at was half full of garbage from being parked under a tree. It was so bad the lower half of the moveable vent was also gone. The other method to get a look at this area is pulling the heater motor. Blistering at the top of the firewall, about 4" down is also a tell tail of excessive rust.
Of course pulling back the front window rubber on the top inside will give you a peak at the pinch weld. With the seam sealer all gone I suspect the truck isn't work the effort to save.
Here is a picture of the dome light when I pulled the lens off on the above truck. Rust everywhere. Suspect it was close to the beach?

I agree it has been done. My question is should it been done. Unless the vehicle has emotional and family ties some of the rust buckets need to go. Find a nicer one to start with. Save time, money and the marriage.

I will say the passage of time can find fault with those kinds of decisions.
My seemingly logical decision in 1986 to pull the 440, 727, and dana 60 from a rusty 71 R/T Challenger and put it in a 68 Barracuda, then scrap the Challenger hasn't stood the test of time very well

No offense, but these C10s will NEVER be on the level of a Challenger RT. Ever.

None taken. At the time it was a ten year old car I paid $1100 for the pleasure of owning. With a stout 440, Dana 60, a nice interior, oh, and both B pillars so rusted you could look through them and see the rear tires. A nice low mile Illinois car.

Of course there’s no comparison between a C10 and that Challenger, but the HO gets to think about it.....more
