Suburban roof rack help
I have a 1990 Suburban roof rack on my '70 and am in need of 2 more cross bars. I am willing to buy a whole rack if needed. The cross bars are about 43 1/2" long plus a bit more that fit into the main channel. They are adjustable and are held by a black plastic lock nut. Any body out there have any to help me out? Thanks, PS-I am a "premium" member now-so OK to post this here? Pictures attached.

Re: Suburban roof rack help
Thanks, I plan on hauling a canoe that weighs about 50+ Lbs. and I think a couple more cross bars would help and maybe 2 more mid supports. Not much response yet....Guess I'll try the wrecking yards.

Re: Suburban roof rack help
I have no clue...
That's one of those things that require scrounging I bet. Have you stopped in at one of your local Chevrolet dealership parts counters? I've gone to them knowing full well that I won't get the part, but they may be able to turn you on to a lead on where to find what you are looking for. Doesn't hurt to ask.

Re: Suburban roof rack help
My '88 Beast did not come with a roof rack, but I have one to put on it. My question is: How did you attach it to the new 'burb? Meaning, what kind of bolts did you use, how did you seal the holes, measurements to center it, etc. I also have the rear wing to attach.
Thank you for the information. James |

Re: Suburban roof rack help
I've pretty much decided not to use it, but-if I were to use it-I would use "nut-serts" ...not sure if spelling is correct, but they are "nuts" that are installed with a tool like a rivet gun in the roof and the rack would bold to it. I would use some seam sealer or? to seal around the threads,

Re: Suburban roof rack help
Those cross rails are the same ones used on the '84-'91 JEEP Grand Wagoneer

Re: Suburban roof rack help
Well... I don't think "riv-nuts" are the way to go on thin sheet metal like our roofs. When the wind is pushing on whatever is strapped to the rack you might want the force, at the bolt attachments, to be spread out more than just where the bolt is. You might consider either large washers on the underside or bolting through a piece of plate to spread the shear force to a larger areas...like this pic. I've had those riv-nuts pull out when attached to thin metal before when the bolt is pulled in a non-straight manner.

Re: Suburban roof rack help
I used riv nuts when I put a rack on my avalanche. go slow and they are easy. but on these trucks with easy access to the underside...I definitely would go with a fender washer and bolt nut setup. just my opinion
