Need opinion on factory tach
Hello, I went to a local junkyard the other day. I found an 80 silverado with a factory tach. The windsheild is gone, so it's been out in the weather for a while. I'm wanting to put this in my 83 C-20. Questions for those who know about this stuff. Can this tach be rebuilt? How much would it cost? Should I buy it, or just pass. I'm one of those people who a long time ago, bought a guage cluster off Ebay, and it won't work with my truck. Now I know a bit more about them. The 80 will work with my truck, but just worried about being out in the weather, and if it's serviceable. Thanks, David

I didn't even stop to ask him. He has been a little high on the other things that I have bought. I like going to his yard because he will let you just look around and with about 400 cars, that's what I did for 1 1/2 hours. I checked with LMC, I can get the printed circuit board for it ($80.00). The truck was either a fully optioned truck, or customized by the last owner. It had blazer buckets and center console, PW,PDL,A/C even the door speakers. It's only missing the windshield, hood and grill. I had to look at the emissions sticker to see what year it was (1980). As soon as I find out some more info, I'll go talk about a price. Thanks, David

Crossy is the expert on these, but from what I remember in conversations not many people can fix them. I don't know for sure that he found anyone that can.

www.yearone.com has a company that's fixing these for stuff like GTO's so I'm sure they could fix it for the GM truck as well. I think it was something like $125 flat to repair them but that was a while ago. Might be more now.
Are you restoring or hot rodding it? If hot rod I would go aftermarket. Finding a working tach dash is near impossible. I had a 79 with a tach dash that didn't work right and I can honesly say I have NEVER seen one that worked right. All we way off. Mine at a 600 in gear idle showed 1900 RPM. 70mpg (about 3,000 rpm) it pointed straight down at about 8,000 RPM.

Crossy might come along and confirm this, but to date no one has been able to repair GM truck tach's. It can be "restored" if it working, but not repaired. Your best bet is to keep an eye on Ebay for a decent deal. Make sure you know what your looking for though. Most of the guys selling on Ebay advertise them as fitting 73-87. That is soooo not true. They are not one size fits all.....

Didnt someone here take the guts out of a cheap autometer and fix one? I think it was on the 73+ blazer board
