wheel options
I have a '88 GMC V3500. Purchased with Cepek Hummer H1 wheels (16.5x8.25, 7" offset).
The big offset works because the truck still has dually axles (Dana 70 rear and Dana 60 front). I don't have a spare and want to move away 16.5" wheels anyway. Questions: What are my options - should I look at H1 wheels with similar offset in 17" (these seem expensive)? A friend suggested custom wheels made by someone like Detroit Steel Wheels - anyone done this? Is there a simple option for modifying the axles/hubs to make more conventional offset wheels a better option? |

What type of tire do you want? What type rim too? I checked on cepec site and it’s 2 grand for 4 17 inch rims. Ouch! |

After a little research, I'm starting to second guess myself.
The 2-piece hummer OE steel wheels along with a PVC bead-locker is something that I can mount a tire in my driveway without a tire shop (and without ether/fire). That is a definite benefit but would mean sticking with 16.5" tires. I may want to go with 2 piece hummer steel 16.5 wheels. The question is whether the supply of surplus 16.5 tires is going to dry up in the near future. |

Good possibility 16.5’s will be extinct.

I've got a set of 16x10 Series-82 Wheel Vintiques rims in good condition that I'd consider selling, if you'd consider conventionally offset rims.

The DRW front hubs can be machined into SRW hubs. Look for posts on Pirate4x4.com for what it takes. In the rear, running a single wheel on the dually rear gets you close to same track width as front, 1” wider on either side but finding a SRW rear axle not that hard.

16.5 HUMVEE tires can be had cheap surplus new and used. Just get a HUMVEE wheel and tire for a spare and keep what you have. Check Colony Tires in Carolina. The supply of surplus Goodyears and BFGs will not be going away.
