Smile listen to this

A guy I know has a 75 c10 w/ 6" lift and 33" tires. He was telling me he thinks his transfer case was shot because when he puts it in 4wd he gets a clunking noise and the truck shakes. So I asked what TC did he have (he didn't know) I take a look and it's a 203 w/ part time kit. I told him could be the chain. So he locks the front hubs and puts it in 4wd and pull forward and the front drive shaft is all over the place, the slip yoke has about 3/4" of side to side play. I look closer and the double cardian joint is rubbing on the tranny cross member hence the very repetative clunking noise. Well I think I made his day, he was trying to unloaded but he couldn't find any takers.
I do have a question, his tranny cross member looks like it sets up further from the TC, would this be because of the 203 or the tranny(TH350)? i.e. my 205s w/ SM465s, the cross member is closer to the TC.

I would have to look at mine (203/350).

Sounds more like the tansfercase mounts are bad/sagged or oilsoaked, and probably wiped out the output bearing. If that is the case there is a good chance that the t-case is out of oil.

The only cross member was for the tranny the TC is just hanging off the back of the tranny. When I wiggled the driveshaft, I didn't see alot of play at the CV. But the cv hitting the crossmember can't be good.
