Rear Window Removed, Some Rust Spots - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I have removed my Rear Window to install a Slider Window. The inside is in perfect shape. However, on the outside there are 3 areas starting to rust.

What should I do about this, if anything at all? Meaning is there anything I could do to just stop/protect these areas before installing the Slider?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts / help.

Tape off around it , then lightly sand it and brush on some rust convertor/inhibitor stuff like POR etc....

Would the lightly sanding & POR-15 be enough or that kit I posted about is better (or over kill)? I also saw a POR-15 "Silver" by itself (along with Black POR-15 by itself too).

Your rust spots are not much to be worried about...they're small and just enough to pop the paint, AND the gasket will cover up the quick repair. POR-15 (or similar) is probably overkill, but, if done correctly, is certainly the best you can ask for.

If it were mine, I'd carefully sand the rust spots until they were shiny steel (no rust color left - maybe even use a small sand blast unit, probably overkill). The tape idea from Palf is a good one for the sanding, especially where you might over sand and get into paint that will be exposed after the back glass and gasket are installed. After sanding, I'd re-tape, hit it with some self-etching primer, let dry, hit with some gray primer, dry , then brush on a heavy coat of "something" like rustoleum, industrial enamel, or tractor paint...whatever that can be brushed on and counted on to last.

Before you go the extra effort in using POR 15 (or similar)...make sure you read the instructions...that stuff works and works well...if and only if you do it per the instructions.

I am a fan of Eastwood Rust Encapsulater. Much easier to use than POR, but both as well as other brands will work. Just clean it and put something on it to keep it from getting worse.

I went with that kit, it is MUCH smaller that the photo lead you (or me) to believe - it is just the right size. Though I will have TONS left over, I doubt I am using even 1% of it. Neither O'Riley's or AutoZone had POR-15 but Advanced Auto carried the kit - $31 and some change. I call that a good deal for peace of mind ;-)

I opened each "rusty" area with a poking tool, to get loose paint up. Just kind of felt how tough the paint seemed to be and then stopped. None of my poking felt like the rust got very far down, the metal seemed solid.

I am on stage 2 right now and letting that metal prep stuff do its thing for 20~30 minutes. Then I'll put the two light coats of POR-15 on. Then call it done. The rubber seal will cover all of this POR-15 patching.

If you have any left over that you want to reuse,
Put saran wrap between the lid and the can.
This will let you open the lid again.
If you don't it will seal itself shut.

That is pretty intense paint! Thank you Getter-Done for that tip, just went out to the garage to do just that (would have never known)!

I have two coats on and got the tape pulled off. Looks like someone dropped a few black Chiclets on the edge of my window seal ;-)

Hopefully I can get the neighbor to help on the outside, while I pull the rope from inside tomorrow when he gets off work to get the Slider Window installed. He was going to help me today but I got derailed with the POR-15.

This is how the driver side came out after scrapping to good metal and then doing the 3 stage POR-15. Seems nice and dry this morning, so hopefully I'll get in the slider tonight when I have a helper.
