washer wont stop squirting

new motor,new switch.All worked fine for a while then suddenly the washer squirts with every wipe till the tank is empty.So of course I pulled off the hose.Why would this happen?

I assume it's clicking the entire time. That's what the original does anyway. Check your wiring. Other than that seems a bad switch. That's a guess.

If it helps, here's the wiring set-up. I should have said, here's my wiring set-up (1971). If I recall it's in-line with a diagram on this website.


Wiper switch wiring: The following descriptions are from the top down for the switch in a mounted position.

• 18 AWG light blue: Operates the wipers (high/low). This wire runs to the dual pins on the RH (TS) portion of the motor.

• 18 AWG dark blue: Operates the washer. This wire runs to the dual pins in the bottom of the motor. NOTE: The bottom is the widest of the two dual connector/pins on the motor.

• 18 AWG black: Ground wire. This wire connects to the single pin on the RH (TS) portion of the motor.

Other wire (power):

• 18 AWG yellow: This wire runs from the fuse box to the connector on the bottom of the motor. A second yellow wire leads from this connector to the dual pin connector on the RH (TS) portion of the motor. NOTE: Yellow was positioned on the bottom of both dual connectors.


Edit, the above wire function descriptions may be wrong. This says:

Wiper switch plug:
Black wire = low speed
Dark blue (center) wire = wash
Light blue wire = high speed

The wiper switch wires are ground wires. If you remove the switch and simply jump them to ground, it will make each function work.
**NOTE - for high speed, you have to ground BOTH light blue & black at the same time.

Also, the factory wiring diagram for the wiper motor is incorrect. This one is correct:

Could it be that your switch is sticking, broken, or no hooked up right?

You probably already know this: washer pump is mechanical, driven off the wiper motor, it is held in the "engaged" position by a relay, when the relay shuts off the washer pump is turned off by a mechanical cam ( been a while since I've been into one, I think that's right) Anyway, what I'm getting at is this: if the pump is not shutting off it could be a mechanical failure inside the wiper motor or (obviously) electrical - power is being supplied continuously. If you have pulled ANY power off the wiper circuit it might feed back & keep the washer pump on. I found on one rig the hot wire for the electric choke was tapped into the wiper circuit, the washers would not shut off.

Side note: whoever designed the system was either a mad genius or high on crack!

You got that right!

It would have been so much simpler to just put a small electric motor and pump at the reservoir. The Rube Goldberg arrangement has always been a source of frustration, but hey! maybe I shouldn't talk about it, cause mine's working these days!

For what it's worth I have seen to many GM washer pumps that don't operate properly so on my '71 I used a universal pump mounted on the inside firewall using the trigger wire from the switch to power the pump. Works great every time and hopefully it keeps me from getting back up there for repairs.

Back up there is right. It was the second to last thing I removed from the cab.

Can someone explain what regulates how long the "squirt" cycle is?

Like for auto-parking wipers, the switch gives it the initial ground signal; it receives ground when it's in the sweep position but not the park position, so it returns and stops after a full cycle if the switch is turned off. Simple.

But what controls the length of the washer cycle? Why 3 pumps instead of 7, for example?

the relay is pulled shut, on the bottom is a lever, as the wiper motor rotates there is a cam that contacts the lever & shoves it over breaking contact with the relay. Pis are a square body truck. Can't see well in the pics but on the white plastic wheel there is a ramp that moves the steel leg over after one revolution. I'm assuming the 67-72's are similar.

Yes, pics don't show it well. there is a slot in the plastic cam that the leg drops into after it is pushed over by the ramp, the purple spring holds tension on the leg and works against the relay.

Mine was not working so just installed a $20 electric washer pump and plumbed it in.
Super easy and works great.
Just jumped off the old pump wiring.
