Another 8 lug wheel thread

Trying to find my future wheel choice for my C20. Ive been through most/all of the threads I can find and can't settle on anything.

I am looking for a retro style / steelie / rally / smoothie wheel in 17"/18" that preferably accepts a modern 8 lug center cap. The Detroit Steel Del Ray is the closest thing that fits the bill but I cant find many trucks running the 18", so I am not sold on it yet.

Is there another manufacturer out there with a simple style steel wheel that has a retro/resto mod look to it? Id even consider the OE style basic steel wheel with a little more diameter to it, minus the dog dish caps.

I am not interested in 20s, chrome, H2, or anything that doesn't have an OE or retro/simple style. Thanks in advance!

Re: Another 8 lug wheel thread

I searched for years for a retro style wheel with 8 lug pattern. Detroit is the only company who sells 8 lug wheels with the correct offset. Wheel Vintiques sells 16" steel wheels but they are only available in 16x6 -16x8 with 4" backspace and 16x10 w/ 5" backspace. There are a couple companies that will make custom retro smoothie style aluminum wheels but they cost around $1200 EACH.

I just ordered Detroit Smoothies & whitewall tires. DSW customer service has been very helpful. Should have my new wheels within the next few weeks. I will be running a 315/35/20 rear and 245/40/20 on the front. I can post some pictures if you like.

Thanks, I am seeing the same thing you stated and was hoping I was missing something. Please post pics of your setup, that sounds pretty slick.

I am about 90% set on del rays at the moment and was hoping a cheaper equivalent was available.

Is Detroit steel multiple weeks out on all wheels or is that typical turnaround?

When I called they told me it could take up to 12 weeks. Said they were backed up on orders and waiting for materials. I placed the order that Monday and was told I would be contacted to arrange payment when they received materials and were ready to start making them. A couple days later I got the call, paid and was told 3-4 weeks for them to build and powder coat. I called back the following Monday hoping to change the color I chose, guy said no problem. 5 minutes later he called back and said they were already built and sent to powder coat. So they were built and off to powder coat after one week. Now I’m just waiting anxiously, hope to have them within the next week or two.

Very cool, thanks for the info. Please post some pics once you receive.

I am up to 90% set on the del rays and will probably place my order early this week.

Re: Another 8 lug wheel thread

I am about to pull the trigger on some Detroit Steel Del Ray wheels in 18x8. I will be running a 275/65/18 tire which is about 32"x11".

These wheels are available in 3.5, 4.0, 4.5, and 4.75 BS. I am thinking the 4.5 BS is a reasonable safe bet to keep the tire tucked in a little bit. This is a fat tire but I do have a 2" front spring lift on the truck (2WD)

Please sanity check this thinking or provide information on comprable wheel/tire setups if available

Re: Another 8 lug wheel thread

Finally received the center caps a couple weeks ago. She's a short bed now. Here are some pics. I haven't put the trim rings on yet because they are definitely going to scratch the powder coating. I'm almost certain I am going to put them on it just makes me bit nervous.

Front: 20x8 4.75" backspace 245/40/20
Rear: 20x11 8.5" backspace 315/35/20

Those look awesome, very nice. I think the trim ring would look slick.

I never updated this thread but I did buy the DSW Del Rays. Took about 8 weeks after the order and got them on 2 weeks ago. Tires are 275/65/18

ItWillbeSlow, That's a perfect wheel & Tire combo for that truck. Looks tough.

dagnabbitt, I didn't take enough picture to do a build thread but fell free to PM if you have questions. Don't want to hijack but here is a quick summary.

Converted from Leaf Springs to Trailing Arms using CaptnFab's axle perches on my Dana 60.
Shortened the Frame using the brothers kit.
CPP Heavy Duty C-Notch
Air Lift D2600 air bags on all 4 corners.
71-87 POL C20 Drop Spindles, POL C10 Tubular Upper Control Arms, Moog C20 Upper 7 Lower Ball Joints. Wilwood D52 Calipers.
Amazon generic rear shock relocation kit.
PBfab Adjustable Track Bar.
FiTech EFI with Boyd Fuel Tank.

Re: Another 8 lug wheel thread

Those DelRays look GREAT on the truck
(and not to hijack either, but Kev-O that truck looks amazing too.

On my '68 C20 Utility, I stuck to basics (Wheel Vintique' (satin black) steelies, needed to order another (last Spring) and still waiting.
I have a 50thAnn that I'll eventually get to, but still looking at wheel choices.

Anyway, those DelRays look way cool

Re: Another 8 lug wheel thread

I've been going through the website and I agree that those del rays look great. Every once in a while you see something that looks like something that GM would make, but didn't. Pretty cool look.
