1971 Inflation Fighter Pickup

What was the story behind this one? Looks like a stripper C/10 with chrome bumper, hubcaps, and paint stripes. I am guessing it's either a 250 or 307. Was there an RPO for this package?

Re: 1971 Inflation Fighter Pickup

I'm not sure what the RPO was. But you nailed about what it included. The '71 Inflation Fighter was the first time offering of packaged options at a discounted price. While the Highlander spruced up a mid-range trim truck, the Inflation Fighter did the same, but minimally, for the base trim trucks. Basically an appearance pkg. I'm not sure power options were limited, but it's my hunch these trucks were only dealer ordered and probably late year. It's funny, but I associate the newfound inflation issue back then with the '73 oil embargo. But I guess that was just the start of price gouging by way of blaming shortages. I remember that's when they said there was a sugar and a paper shortage, so everything using those commodities jumped up in price, like double. I was young, still in HS in '71/'72, but I do recall a thing about the devaluation of the dollar during Nixon's administration. I remember car prices jumped up, and I suppose housing. Probably interest, too. It was back then I learned words like inflation, shortage, and recession that I don't recall hearing before then.

Re: 1971 Inflation Fighter Pickup

There was an RPO code for it. I’ll have to see if I have a glove box door with it on there.

That’s a cool commercial. I wouldn’t have a problem owning any of the trucks on it. You just cannot beat any media that shows our trucks when they were brand new.

That's what we need right now. A great looking pickup.

I wonder what it cost back then?

Re: 1971 Inflation Fighter Pickup

That's less then $18,000 accounting for inflation, and we're stuck with this new garbage.

I will give 20,500 for a rcsb with a LT1 350, and a M22. You know for towing performance.

You can buy a new Ford Maverick for under $20k. It probably beats the 71 C10 base model specs in every way (besides looks and nostalgia).

Just a quick look, they have:
Almost the same GVWR and towing capacity.
Almost the same price (adjusted for inflation)
Maverick wheel base is 121", C10 115" or 127"- so right in the middle.
Maverick has modern safety systems
Maverick gets better MPG and better performance (when compared to the base c10 engine)
Maverick seats 4

Before anyone gets too upset, I just wanted to make a counter point for the sake of the argument that "America doesn't make 'em like the used to". They do sometimes but it's just that no one wants them. FYI, I'd buy a Silverado, or F150, before I considered a Maverick.

Re: 1971 Inflation Fighter Pickup

Here is another Infaltion Fighter commercial. Looks like Chevy threw in a better seat too:

The Maverick is UGLY. Not as ugly as the Ranger, but it has a face 2 mom's couldn't love

And it's built on modified Ford Focus underpinnings.

I haven't seen one and would not consider buying one. That said, magazine writers view it favorably.... for what it is.

Except, you really can't buy one for 20k. They froze sales on it, and most dealers are pretty candid on their much higher prices than MSRP. I know, because I was in the market for a new car 2 weeks ago.
