Got my new Shop up, FINALLY
Well Gents, I FINALLY got my shop up!
It was such a struggle to get the concrete work done and the get decent weather for the Building to be installed. I’ve been using the phrase “When I get my shop up” for about FIVE years. I’m happy to say that I won’t be using that phrase, ever again. The truck loves her new house. No more staying out in the weather for any of my vehicles. My Buddy and i are going to get it wired this week, then I have to convince my lovely bride that I need spray foam insulation. She’s already agreed to me buying a Lift. So here’s a picture of the Truck in her new house. Last edited by LockDoc; 01-16-2022 at 05:58 PM. |

Very nice. I love that I went with the spray foam in mine. About 15ish years now and worth every penny.

What size? I’m in the middle of doing a 24x36 pole barn. I’ve been being told that the foil backed insulation with an air gap is best for insulating a steel sided building. What is making you lean toward spray foam? Good luck with your building! They fill up fast!

Re: Got my new Shop up, FINALLY
A contactor friend of mine really likes spray foam. He says it makes the building more sturdy.
The down side to spray foam at least for now is the huge increase in price of the foam itself. |

Re: Got my new Shop up, FINALLY
If you can afford it, spray foam it!
The benefits will far outweigh the cost down the road. I have a 30'×60' with the bubble wrap and trust me, it's just as cold/hot inside as it is outside. Plus the spray foam will help keep the bugs, rodents, spiders to a minimum. They will still get in around the roll up door.

Re: Got my new Shop up, FINALLY
Looks good, I have an 18x36 stick built shop that I could never get my C10 through the door. Termites got into the door frame and they actually did me a favor. I just recently rebuilt the front wall with a larger 10 ft opening and now my old truck is happy and dry.

I would have went bigger if I could, but the space wouldn’t allow it. Reason for the insulation? Of course the thermal aspects, but also sound deadening. I was working in there today with heavy rain and couldn’t here my music playing.p |

Re: Got my new Shop up, FINALLY
Looks good and well braced. One way to better your chances for spray foam is to invite your gal out to the shop during a heavy rain.
On the wiring, end each run in a square box with a quad outlet. Once things get placed in the shop, some outlets will be easier to get at and will attract plugs. A single duplex outlet at those spots won't be enough. Might run a 60A welder plug and an 80A EV charger box. Might not have an EV today but that seems to be where things are going. A lot easier to run stuff before the insulation and any interior siding goes up. |

Re: Got my new Shop up, FINALLY
When I wired mine is used EMT tube between metal boxes spaced 8 feet apart (every second metal post). All wire was 12 G for 20A capability and all outlets are 20A 4 gang sets.
All outlets are both grounded to the metal building and to a return ground wire in the tube. Dedicated 20A breakers carrying no more than 3 boxes per breaker. Dedicated 220v for both compressor and welder. 100 A Sub panel for Hoist. Shed is on a dedicated separate meter, 200A feed from utility pole. Average power bill over 12 months is around $45 a month. (I use waste oil for heat and ceiling fans for summer air movement.) Build room has air con, but it is only used about three months a year.

Re: Got my new Shop up, FINALLY
2 suggestions for wiring. Always use the deep boxes and wire so every other receptacle is on the same breaker. Doing this way gives you 40A potential between the 2 outlets when you are working. Saves alot of nuscense trips.

Re: Got my new Shop up, FINALLY
Update:
I bought a Bendpac Magnum 9000 lbs 2-post Lift this week. I don’t have it installed yet, but it’s really here The Last item will be the Big Air Compressor, but that’ll have to wait another month or so |

Cool.
The big air compressor will be worth the wait.
