upper dash color

I'm sure it's been asked before but I can't find the thread.

The portion of the dash from the dash pad forward (where the defrost vents go thru). Is it supposed to be body color with flat finish or flat black? I think the flat is to prevent reflection on sunny days. But i could be wrong on that and it's supposed to be gloss. Anyway, what say you experts?

PS> 67 Chevy with blue interior.

Thanks in advance

Re: upper dash color

Interesting read in this thread I started on pads and carpets. It rolled into the color of the top of the dash you are asking about.

Re: upper dash color

Take a white sheet of paper and lay it on your dash on a sunny day and it will reflect so much light you'll have a hard time seeing thru the windshield , A gloss finish or a white dash makes it hard to see .

Re: upper dash color

I have never seen a truck that wasn't flat black, but all the ones I have seen or owned had black dash pads. It definitely was not shiny paint from GM. As mentioned, it creates a HUGE amount of glare.

Re: upper dash color

I painted mine body color but used matte clear. It looks amazing.

I bought the 2k Aerosol since I didn't need very much.

Re: upper dash color

When I was repairing a rust hole on the passenger side of mine, I primed it, then covered it in heavy vinyl to match the black dash pad and seats.

Re: upper dash color

I guess my '72 K20 is an outlier. Medium olive green body, same color interior including top of the dash from the dash pad to the base of the windshield. Matching green dash pad which I replaced a few years ago. Paint on top of the dash is the same paint that was on it when I bought the truck in 1977. I am positive it is untouched since the truck was built in August 1971.

Re: upper dash color

When I did my frame off I painted that area body color including clear coat. I drive my truck nearly ever day in sunny southern California and have never had an issue with glare. It was body color from the factory.

Re: upper dash color

A local shop, that restores lots of these trucks, paints the dash body color but adds a flattener to the paint used for this area. Personally I also like to paint the vents same as the dash.

Originally a flat finish painted to match the dash pad color. Black dash pad = black paint. Saddle dash pad = saddle paint.

Re: upper dash color

Based on the original paint my 68 C10 had when I bought it, the dash top was a slightly darker shade than rest of the cab interior. It was defiantly a matte/satin finish. Truck was a factory red interior truck someone had started converting to black.

Re: upper dash color

Same, I have a baby blue truck with what I would call a flat navy dash. I believe it to be original.

Re: upper dash color

i have an orange 67.. dash pads i dont believe ever came in orange so they would use that cinder red 67 color on the dash to match the reddish pad.
ive seen that on both my 67`s and my 68 that was orange as well originally (bought it painted black)
