Your comments contradict each other. A 1979 chevy small block did not have a serpentine belt- those came out later in the 80's. It is possible that it was swapped at some point, but who knows. Either way, does this have V belts or is it serpentine? Here is a site that helps you identify the alternator you have. If you swap the same "frame" of alternator, it should bolt right in.
