Temp sender

Is the temp sender in the block filled with oil? I thougt I saw a little drop of oil oozz out of it two days ago. The is from the sender not the block right? It seems to function still. Should I be concerned? Or will it just stop working if it all leaks out? Just want to be sure it is reading correct still.

How much coolant will I have to drain to pull it? And were can I get new one just napa or something?

No, not any oil in it that I know of. You are talking about the one in the drivers head, right?

If you have to replace it, just drain the coolant low enough to where the level in the radiator is below the sender.

Yes I was tightening it so the nut part would be flat by header flange and between the outer rim and inner core it looked like some black oil leaked out not much. It seems to work think it will be ok? It would work or not work right? Or can it give incorrect readings? I thought maybe the were filled with oil or something? I think I will just watch it and go from there. It is not dripping off or anything in fact i can not see it anymore.

Funny, I just called NAPA today about temp sending units.

3 months ago I picked one up for my '82 K30 (454) and it hasn't been registering on the gauge. I posted a question here on the board and the opinion was that they gave me the wrong unit.

Napa has the unit for "Idiot Lights" for $14.95, and the one for gauges is $6.95.

Make sure you get the right one, I'm picking up the "gauge" one for my truck tomorrow. Anybody need a nice brass paperweight?

Maybe when you were tightening it, some sealer or gunk ozzed out from around the threads or something. Far as I know you are right. They either work or don't. I don't think I would worry too much about it unless it quits working or coolant start leaking out.

When I bought my '76 back in November, the temp gauge didn't work at all. I suspected the sending unit, so I bought a new one at O'Reilly Auto Parts. I replaced it, and then when the engine started warming up, the gauge would peg completely out. It kinda freaked me out at first, but my dad used one of his temp guns and we knew that the engine wasn't getting too hot. I wound up having to get a second one from O'Reilly (free of charge of course), and now it seems to work like a charm.

Sounds to me like you need to change your blinker fluid. Must be some restriction in the blinker lines and the fluid is backing up into your temp sender....
