Re: Tow Hooks: Post your foundry casting marks

The one forge symbol above resembles that for the Continental Foundry and Machine Co. shown here: http://the.shadock.free.fr/sherman_m...Trademarks.pdf

I know there is another thread re white tow hooks but to add to Larry’s post here’s yet another example. Prior to the 72 model year tow hooks as a factory option were only available with a painted bumper. For 72 the painted bumper requirement was dropped but hooks could only then be had on “K” models. I suspect at least some were painted white by GM and perhaps it’s a plant-specific like white paint accents in highlander blazers from St Louis.

Re: Tow Hooks: Post your foundry casting marks

I dug these out just to see if they had similar markings but they do not and appear never to have been installed. The only marking on these is the '2800'. Best I can tell these are part number 2234024 front hooks for 3500-5000 series trucks.

Another I found- same hexagon with U in the middle. Believe this is a C-60 and larger style front tow hook.

Some more from another pair. I couldn't detect any evidence of white paint on these.

Re: Tow Hooks: Post your foundry casting marks

Figured I’d post examples of the reproduction tow hooks now circulating. Would be helpful to have more examples so please post ‘em if you got ‘em.

The 72-only extreme bend examples (only photo I have) of the “same grade steel” not otherwise specified.

Another replica being sold. “Sand-molded, mild steel” I guess that means cast not forged copies of the original. What is “mild” steel?

Re: Tow Hooks: Post your foundry casting marks

Mild steel means low carbon. Definitely cast. More likely to bend and break.

EDIT: BTW...if we're going to start casting something for these trucks...why aren't we doing the trim rings for the 3/4T Spicer lockouts. No safety issue there (though I assume no one is hooking a chain the those repro hooks), and IMO there is a definite market for them. I mean the repro plastic dials are $100 for gosh sakes.

DOUBLE EDIT: I guess these are stronger than I would have imagined according to 72ironmike: https://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/...d.php?t=818316, but GM forged the originals for a reason.

I use my tow hooks and these repops just make me nervous. I just put medium truck front hooks on the rear of my truck.

Re: Tow Hooks: Post your foundry casting marks

Bring back an older thread on the tow hook mysteries. Just acquired these 3 hooks, two an obvious pair and one looks to be a LH single. Have seen a LOT of tow hooks thru the years but have never seen anything like these at all. Look VERY similar to the 73-80 style tow hooks seen on the square body trucks except for the odd curvature at the mounting end. Lower portion is identical to the curvature of the 73-80 hook end. One hook is marked "14029217" and I presume a left hook with the PN ending in an odd number. The other two are marked "14029218", one having additional numbers of 468, the other does not. The 14029217 hook has additional numbers of 400. ALL have the letter "U" clearly marked on the shank. 5/8'' diameter mounting holes, holes are 3 3/8" at center to center, shank is 1'' in thickness. Each weighs a hefty 4 1/2 lbs per.

Was doing a search for these thru the board and landed on this thread. Perfect place to post these and hopefully someone has some info concerning them. Was going to post on the WIW board for a future SALE thread but thought this would be a better place for posting.

A Google search turned up NADA for pics or info on these.

Those look like 81-87 hooks. Regular RPO for hooks is V76 but there is also V70 for Hooks-Towing-Export. Not sure what would be special for export tow hooks.
Looks like there was a pair similar listed Ebay awhile back https://www.gm***************/thread...-option.24301/

Agree the hooks I have posted look similar to the 81-87 style but to the best of my knowledge the 81-87 style hooks are made more in a true round rod shape with an obvious bulge or bulbous section at the bolt mounting. Much more slender in design also.

As for the reproduction sand cast hooks, don't think I would want to put those to a real test other than for just to be stylin' so to speak. Mild steel and sand cast would not even come close to a forged hook in strength in my opinion. I'll stick with the General's original forged hooks.

Should come with a "REPRODUCTION" marking of some sort. Bound to get someone hurt or worse one of these days.

Pretty sure those are the late 70s heavy duty gm option. No sure how many years they were used, but i think they were like a one ton application. Check with trevor from KS. (drawing a blank on his board name) Or ask on the 73-87 side. I may need a single, but can't remember which side if they come up for sale...

Eric, You Are Da Man,!! Went to the 73-87 forum section and did a search for ''one ton tow hooks''. An older thread came up from 2013 for tow hook options on 81-87 trucks. Believe it was member KrazyLarry who posted a pic of those exact same hooks saying a friend of his pulled them from a one ton 4x4 at a salvage yard. Also mentioned they are rather extremely hard to find. Makes sense being for the one ton crowd as with a beefier frame and running gear combo it would make for a more extreme load pulling weight capability possible. They will be going to the 73-87 parts forum at some point. Check to see if you need a single left or right if you have an interest in such. Thanks for the search tip,

I'll second the "dangerous " if used as a real hook was intended.
