Yeah towing in O/D seems like a bad idea. I was mainly after the granny low. Makes backing up and maneuvering a trailer in the city and the dump much easier. I'm one of the few people that likes short wheelbase towing. I work mainly on Ohio State campus, so I use my FJ cruiser and m1101 a lot to get in and out of tight alleys and drives.
Clutch and flywheel ordered. This should be a fairly straightforward swap. Even the driveshafts fit without modification. H2 wheels and tires last on the list. |

The Granny 6.55:1 on the SM465 is lower than all of the NV4500 offerings
The 1993 NV4500 was only slightly higher geared at 6.35:1 but the 1994 & later was 5.61:1 When you aren't towing 0.73:1 Overdrive 5th gear is nice vs the 1:1 4th gear on the SM465. You could get the same 0.73:1 OD with a Gear Vendors OD box on the SM465 and split shift 1st, 2nd, & 4th gears to even out the RPMs and you can tow in Overdrive. L, LOD, 1, 1OD, 2, 3, 3OD If I had the 76 to do over I would've put a GV unit and an SM465 in it. Lots less hassle to install with 7 or 8 forward towing gears depending on whether you want to split 2nd gear or not

I have a 93 nv4500. I think it is the best trans for my needs. Not sure how heaving this reading utility bed is, but would really like to go back to a stock bed eventually.

Well drove it today for the first time since the swap. Feels pretty good. Really like the nv4500. Swap couldn't have been easier. I remembered I had my bosses old squarebody for parts a few counties over, so I robbed the 5 speed pedal set, steering column, and a few other small items. Very happy with how this is turning out. 5 psi of boost for now

I'd take it easy on the boost. Use it to make sure there's enough air to burn the fuel present and maybe turn the fuel up a small amount then leave it at that.
Black smoke is wasted power. I like my exhaust nice and clean. The AMG Detroit 6.x bottom end isn't that tough. Main web cracks happen when you overdo it and even when you just drive em.

Most likely staying at 5 psi or less even. Egts 6-800. The truck already feels 100x better with the 5 spd. My goals have more than been met.
I did turn the pump just a bit. Not knowing the history, I didn't want to futz with it too much. Exhaust nice and clean under load and idle/startup. 3" 6.5 downpipe modified to fit. 3" the rest of the way out. Pretty quiet...relatively speaking |
