Re: 68 C20 with 327 excessive fan noise
I just looked closer. You have a fan clutch on it.
The lower p/s pulley on the crank is nothing I have see before. However, it the belts line up I wouldn't worry about it. The function is it as worked for over 50 years. I have included a picture of a standard crankshaft power-steering pulley as a reference. |

Re: 68 C20 with 327 excessive fan noise
Oops, I was looking at one of the pictures others posted. I thought it was copied down.
You have a unique set up. Others have posted pictures of the correct set up. Your belts do not appear to line up. Difficult to tell from pictures but another indication it has been assembled from parts. I have all the correct pulleys for your application. If interested PM me. Cheers |

Re: 68 C20 with 327 excessive fan noise
I put the pulley back on the water pump and ran it without the fan blades and it is quite as all get out. I bolted the 18" fixed blades back on and the noise is defiantly coming from the fan. Now I need to figure out what fan, clutch and pulley to get.

Re: 68 C20 with 327 excessive fan noise
I thought the water pump made noise when you turned it by hand? I would check the fan for cracks. Do you have a recording of it running? If we heard it maybe that would help more.

Re: 68 C20 with 327 excessive fan noise
I thought the water pump made a squeak when I turned it but I guess not. I ran it with water pump hooked up no fan drove it so quiet then put fan back on and it makes a loud whooshing sound not bad at idle but when it has higher RPMS it get louder. I am convinced it is the fan or at least 90% fan.

Become a subscribing member and post a Want To Buy ad in the parts section , Someone will probably have all the parts you need to get it right , I went aftermarket to have everything line up adding power steering and A/C with a six blade fan and clutch . For the low price of a new water pump replace it while you already have it apart

Re: 68 C20 with 327 excessive fan noise
Since you will be changing parts out, consider using studs (instead of bolts) to attach the pulley and fan clutch to the WP. Makes it easier -- I wish I had known about this before I bolted mine back together.

Re: 68 C20 with 327 excessive fan noise
I believe it you go with a fan the asymmetrical blades it will reduce your noise.
The fan clutch may help some also but the blade design is the critical component. |
