Angry *grumble*

Just slid under my truck for a quick check (I was going to change the oil, then realized I didn't have enough time before work) and realized the entire bottom of the pan is wet...with oil, of course...

The oil filter looks clean, so it's not coming out around there, I don't think...the front of the engine is clean (and the front main seal is new) so I don't think it's that...it's always been a bit moist but now it's wet enough to spray some back as far as the tranny tailshaft...and the oil consumption is getting worse.

What do you guys think? Pan gasket? How hard is it to replace on one of these trucks? (original smallblock)

most likey a pan gasket or possibly a rear main seal... you'll hafta wipe everything squeaky clean under there and then do the drive/check routine til you see the source..... best to start clean early in the day so you have time to drive/check for as long as it takes to figure it out..... have fun..

Lightbulb

Check your valve cover gaskets, they could be leaking around the back of the motor and running down like a buddy's of mine is doing we thought it was the rear seal until we pulled the tranny, and discovered it was the valve covers leaking.

Check your oil sending unit or pressure switch (unless you have the mechanical guage). I thought my old 74 Monte Carlo lost a rear main until I traced it to the switch for the idiot light.

It would appear, after doing the change, that the majority of the dripping oil is coming out of the weep hole on the bellhousing, but it's definitely crankcase oil. Any ideas? Rear main? *gulp*

The tranny's coming off in a month or so...
