Protect-o-plate help

I bought a low-mile original '72 C20 that came with the original warranty booklet and Protect-o-plate (see photo). The VIN of course matches, but I was able to match the engine and transmission numbers shown as well. However, I'm not sure what the "D1H" means. I suspect the "R" is for a Rochester Carb, and the "C" is probably the production month. Please share any help.

Re: Protect-o-plate help

What color is the interior?
The D1H I believe is the axle code, but I don't know for certain.

Is it a Dana or Eaton rear axle?

Re: Protect-o-plate help

If you've got the build sheet...box 17 (or thereabouts) will be an axle code. You can see if that syncs up.

Re: Protect-o-plate help

Edit... In your case the Transmission ID is under the VIN and the Rear Axle code is under the engine. I've seen other POPs that have those positions swapped, in which case the picture below would be correct.

I believe your trans is build date of February (B) 23rd. Engine is Feb 29. Truck build month is March (C). I'm not sure what D1H stands for. Seems to be a common number sequence for many trucks though looking at the build date thread.

Would you be willing to post that on the build date thread?

Here's a photo of transmission code Y2B23N. That decodes to "Y" - Made in Toledo, "2" is the model year, "B" is the month (February) and 23 is the day "N" is Night Shift.

The truck is Black/Black.

Re: Protect-o-plate help

Sorry if this is a hijack but I found this kind of interesting. I saved this Protect-o-plate from a junked out '72 Blazer with delivery date of 5/23/72.
V1116TDB is the engine- V: Flint, Mi, 1116: Nov 16, TDB: 307
RAWW321 is the rear axle code- 3.73's RAW: 3.73, W-Warren, 321- 321 day of the year.
N2S12 is the trans code- SM465 4 speed
and it looks like the little bowtie next to the 'K' may mean it was a Chevy K-series (4x4).
Not sure what the single 'B' is for.

The K is for a build month of October... Which is confusing because the engine was built in November. And your rear axle has a build date of 11/17 (321st day of the year).
The B is for Bay City (1 bbl/ 2bbl) and refers to the carburetor source.

I'm not sure why your axle code format varies from the OP's. A decent amount of trucks received the D1H notation.

Makes sense- K is the 11th letter so it would be November for a build month and that would line up with the engine build date being in November as well. This was a Blazer and got a GM 12-bolt rear axle, the OP's got a Dana axle, may explain the D1H axle code?

Maybe. Post 311 on the build date thread has some screenshots and a link to build month codes that I was basing my comments on. Looking at post 65 on the build date thread, there are two entries, that suggest/prove "K" is for October on the truck protecto plates: 2Z116317 and 2Z116528.

Here is some more info on protecto-plates that the OP might find interesting. The "cast date vs stamped date" section towards the bottom of the page also suggests that K would be October on the protecto plate.

Given your engine and rear axle November build dates, maybe there was some confusion when they stamped it with a K for the build month.
