1986 CUCV M1008 K30 A/C options
Trying to decide best way to go to add A/C to non A/C truck. Should I get a doner truck or one of the add on kits like Restomod Air, Vintage Air, or Classic Auto Air? Thanks

Still running the 6.2 diesel with 2 alternators(24V), 1 alt(12V) or a gas motor?

Re: 1986 CUCV M1008 K30 A/C options
I have an M1009 with the vintage air kit and both alternators. The compressor is hung on a custom bracket on the driver side alternator. I wanted to leave the passenger side open for a future turbo install.
I paid $1400 for the vintage air kit and in hindsight it wasn't worth the price. The system doesn't cool very well if it's above 90F outside, and if it's colder than that you don't really need AC anyway. The blower fan is in the cabin and it's extremely loud and annoying. Based on the vintage air kit, I'll never put under dash AC in another vehicle just due to the wildly excessive fan noise. If you want more details on the install into a 24V CUCV let me know

Sorry for not getting all the info in post. Truck has a 454 now but fixing to install an LS engine.

Re: 1986 CUCV M1008 K30 A/C options
Since you have a gas engine, probably easier to buy an aftermarket kit that includes everything. Unless you were planning on doing a gut the cab redo, there are a lot of under dash differences between heat only and AC trucks. The vacuum plumbing operated air handling system for one. IIRC, the firewall itself is different.
79vette - good to know on the vintage air in a M1009. I have a M1008 that I may consider adding AC to at some future point. |
