Which dash speaker with A/C?
Mods, posted here for more eyeballs than the Audio section gets, hope it's OK.
I have searched a ton of threads, can't find quite the answer I need. Factory A/C center outlet takes up some of the space where the speaker is. Factory speaker was ~4x10 and just fits. The decades-old replacement dual speaker (which just went bad) is about the same size. Both attached with a bracket and a single screw. Problem is, Classic Parts and Classic Car Stereos both show A/C trucks using a 5x7, and 4x10 for non A/C. Since my 4x10 just barely misses running into the center outlet, I can't see how a 5x7 could fit in the same space. Seems like they have their listings reversed, but of course I can't talk to anyone who has actually installed a speaker and knows what I'm talking about. My last best hope is board members here. Has anyone actually installed a 5x7 speaker in a factory A/C truck? How did you get it to fit? Did it attach with the factory-type single-screw bracket? Thanks in advance.

Re: Which dash speaker with A/C?
My 68 has the original radio and speaker still in it.
I added factory a/c and had no fit problems. It is tight in there! Mike. |

Go to
www.turnswitch.com Check this link for more info http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...+speaker+radio This is a NEW speaker, I put one in my a/c cab truck and I am very happy with it. No problem with fit. Costs about $50, but it is new quality piece and will last a looong time.

Re: Which dash speaker with A/C?
I failed to mention I'm looking for a dual coil (or even dual speaker) setup, not a single cone like the OEM style. Didn't see one on Turnswitch but I'll look some more in case I missed it, or maybe call them.
Still wondering if anyone has installed a 5x7 speaker in a truck with factory air, and how it was mounted. Doesn't appear to be enough room using the factory mounting screw.

Re: Which dash speaker with A/C?
hey mike,
I used the retrosound 5x7 in my truck with factory AC... it fit like a champ with the bracket that was in there. no alterations to AC or anything and its a DVC... it worked for me in my 69 c10. https://www.crutchfield.com/S-lATkfc...und-R-57N.html will

Re: Which dash speaker with A/C?
^^ I checked out both of those links earlier. Didn't see a dual-cone setup at first but finally found one near the bottom of the page. At $100 it seems a bit spendy for my old work truck, but you sometimes do get what you pay for. Unless something changes my mind, I'll buy from one of our board vendors.

Re: Which dash speaker with A/C?
Sorry to dig up this old post but I am wondering about a speaker upgrade, my truck is original A/C and it is in fact super tight under there. I haven't any idea if the speaker that is in there is working, even if it is I am sure it would sound like poop. I'll be sending my stock GM radio to have it retro-fitted with new bits inside at Joe's.
Stocker what did you end up using for a dual voice coil speaker?

Re: Which dash speaker with A/C?
Sorry these are not factory speakers but it's what I did and it sounds great. I posted this back in 2013 so memory is a bit fuzzy. The pictures where while I was test fitting everything so nothing had been cleaned up and mounted. I ended up making a L bracket for it to use the factory mount to hold it like the radio. On the dash side I used some of the black foam I had and wedged in the gap to fill after I took it out and curved the sheet metal up to tighten it against the bottom of the dash.

Re: Which dash speaker with A/C?
Not really just a very tight fit to put it all in place. I was 10 years younger also!

I got my speaker from Classic Parts, item #69-864. It's been a few years, but I recall it fit okay. Just a tight space to work in.

Re: Which dash speaker with A/C?
I replaced mine with a Retrosound D-412 dual speaker. It is an A/C truck so I had the center vent to contend with. I did have to fabricate a bracket for the speaker to mount to the factory bolt hole.
