differences in steering column shafts
I see some columns with a splined end and some made to accept a squared shaft. Is this a year to year change or maybe the difference between a 4wd and 2wd column? Here's what I have, it's supposed to be from a 78-79, and I'm wanting to install it in my 76 2wd pickup. I'd like to know if it'll fit, before I take my steering shaft out. Thanks!

Re: differences in steering column shafts
The 78 I’m working on has a splined shaft. I’m pretty sure they changed to that style later on like 79 and newer.

So it's not a 2wd versus 4wd thing? Thanks!

Re: differences in steering column shafts
As far as I can find they are just year specific. Don’t think 4 we makes any difference.

Re: differences in steering column shafts
Your welcome. Just went though this a while back. I thought they were all the same and the Jeep steering shaft fit all squares. I was wrong and had to make a shaft work and ended up spending as much making the Jeep shaft work as buying the Borgeson one.

Re: differences in steering column shafts
Which does the jeep shaft fit? The square style, or the splined style? Which style came before 1979, and which came after?

Re: differences in steering column shafts
This tilt should fit 73-83 as the w/wiper switch on dash w/high beam switch on the floor. I have some 87 that are still squared shaft, The bell cover top area on 73-77 column are splined and bolt clamps on the side spline notch.
Whereas the 78-91 column bell cover top area are D shaped and bolt goes throw the center. You should be able to see what one you have.

Re: differences in steering column shafts
The xj steering shaft only fits the square shafts. I bought a steering shaft for a 91 jeek Cherokee.
