Re: Best Aftermarket Transmission?
No 700R4, aka 4L60, will stand up to 800HP.
You are stuck with using a modified THM400 or possibly a 4L80E if you don't mind dealing with the electronics. I would check locally as shipping, if you have an issue, it a big deterrent. Some transmission shops will not deal with modified vehicles. If you go online be careful and read all the reviews. A good friend of mine got totally screwed by Chicago Transmission through Ebay. It was obviously forced together and didn't work out of the box. With this much HP a specialty converter will be required. May cost almost as much as the transmission? Cheers. Re: Best Aftermarket Transmission?
Call Jakes for a 4L80E. You will end up with a fair amount into any T400 or 4L80E to hit that power level. You can always spend less, or go with a 700/4L60 that will strand you at some point. I drive mine every day in the spring/summer/fall and find a little overbuild is required for long term reliability. Parts that support a certain HP level will fatigue with fail after a number of miles.

Re: Best Aftermarket Transmission?
You can make a 4l60 work with 800hp if you put 8" tires on it.
A good friend had a 4L60 in his square body truck behind a 598CI BBC Stroker Crate Engine. It worked fine till he attempted a four wheel drive burn out. Sheared one of the internal shafts. Everything depends on everything else. With that kind of HP you will find the weak link, whatever it happens to be. For those that don't know, the 4L80E (they are all E's) require a electronic controller. Drive Fast take Chances. Last edited by Accelo; 12-17-2022 at 07:42 PM. |

Re: Best Aftermarket Transmission?
The 700R4 was introduced in 1982 for use in Chevrolet and GMC mid-sized vehicles. In 1990, the 700R4 was renamed the 4L60. The transmission was used for 10 years. The aftermarket has turned to the 700R4 as a heavy duty replacement for the 200-4R for use in muscle cars. 1992 was the last year of widespread usage of the 700R4/4L60. However, the 1993 Camaro, Corvette and GMC Typhoon were equipped with the last production 700R4's.
In 1992 electronic controls were added, and it became the 4L60-E. The 4L60E went into service in trucks, vans, and SUVs in 1993, with some vehicles receiving the 4L60 (no electronic transmission control). It was also installed in all RWD passenger cars (the Corvette, Pontiac F bodies and any rear drive B/D bodies, starting in 1994. In 2001, an updated version the 4L65-E, was introduced. This version added five-pinion planetary gears along with an improved high-strength output shaft. These changes were installed to withstand the 300+ ft. lbs of torque the Chevrolet 6.0 liter Vortec engine. Note, the factory ratings are listed by Torque not HP. |

Re: Best Aftermarket Transmission?
look for a used TH 400 early 70s are the best, they are a dime a dozen here in Mi. Find a good trans guy to build it for you, much cheaper than buying a TCI or something similar.

Re: Best Aftermarket Transmission?
With a BBC I would only go with a turbo 400 or a 4l80e, they make too much torque for a 700r4 or a 4l60e.
Call Phoenix Transmission they will take care of your needs, very knowledgeable and excellent customer service. Thanks Chuck Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: Best Aftermarket Transmission?
If you wanna use a 700r4 I would contact Monster Transmissions. They build bad ass transmissions. In my opinion if you're not gunna race it then you will never unleash all 800hp plus the average street wont let you hook up good so bout any trans would work thats built decent. I dont have 800hp but I do have a Monster Trans. They are built real heavy duty thick bell housings etc. They mostly build them for bad ass 4x4 trucks. Anyway thats my 2cents heres the link.

Re: Best Aftermarket Transmission?
I'd stay away from the 700R4 / 4l6Xe but if money were no object and had to run one I would choose RPM Transmissions
https://rpmtransmissions.com/ and as an honorable mention these guys make nice option to the sonnax smart tech drum https://4l79.com/ I spent more than I care to admit on "bullet proof" 4L60Es and honestly they are all on borrowed time behind a built motor. Do yourself a favor put in a 4L80E. The 4L80E will give you an overdrive option compared to the TH400 and most places can build one to handle 800 hp. Re: Best Aftermarket Transmission?
Personally I'd lean towards a Hughes Transmission as they build a lot of stuff for the monster trucks and have a good rep.

Re: Best Aftermarket Transmission?
I know a couple of people running this transmission from TCI. It is good for 850 hp, but a bit costly. It is a 4l that has been extensively modified and now is a 6 speed 4l. Not a 6L.

Re: Best Aftermarket Transmission?
I have a torque convertor from these guys and there are quite a few bracket racers at the track where I work that use their transmissions as well.
