Fuel gauge

I read the (fuel gauge diagnostics 101) before I go pulling my gauge out I have a question. I read and understand that with the wire removed from the fuse box the gauge will read 3 o’clock. When I fill up gauge registers 1/4 tank past full and 1/4 tank when empty. I removed the wire from fuse box and gauge went to little past 4 o’clock (see photo) . Is it safe to say gauge is bad ?. Has new sending unit but you never know. Thanks much

Re: Fuel gauge

Most of the time when I see that, the ground strap for the sending unit is not good. Might have to clean the contact areas or redo the ground strap at the tank.

Since I don’t know what ground strap you’re referring to you may be right lol. I’ve only checked the single brown wire connection at the sending unit and made sure the tank was also secure. Can you share what strap you’re talking about . Thanks much

Re: Fuel gauge

Your gauge is working , before you start replacing parts . Use the old school repair method , Replace the brass float with the jeep plastic float , they don't leak or disolve in todays gas , then bend the float rod slightly to adjust the gauge to read correctly . no need to pull the gauge cluster , Just the sending unit

You have to remember it's 1960's technology .

Re: Fuel gauge

In your photo, it is pointing past 3:00. The gauges I've tested are normally horizontal with the wire disconnected. In all three cases you listed (sender wire grounded, sender wire disconnected, tank full), the gauge is reading abnormally high. It sounds to me like the needle is rotated too far clockwise on the shaft. I have never removed one of these needles before, but if that is possible without damaging anything, I'd be inclined to remove and reinstall it at EMPTY with the sender wire grounded, assuming you have verified you have good grounds first. EMPTY is the most important reading, in my opinion.

Agreed I think needle is off. Later today I’m disconnecting cluster without removing and plugging in another one I have I’ll update with findings

Bad fuel gauge. Here is another restored cluster with an oem gauge and reads correct . The one in truck now is a aftermarket gauge
