Dana 60 Advice
I have the opportunity to pick up a few parts off of a 74 chevy 3/4 4x4. Should I take the dana 60? Would I be able to get this under a 72? Any other parts I should nab? thanks

not a Dana 60, 60s a) didnt come in 3/4 tons and b) werent available until 1977. Dana 44 front isnt a bad choice if you're going to keep your tire size under 35" and the price is right. with the older D44s they have the flat top knuckles that everyone who wants to do crossover steering with a 10 bolt or Dana 44 front needs to do so. yes, it will bolt under a 72, but will be the same as what you have except for 8 lug. if you plan on swapping to a 14 bolt full floater rear, or an Eaton(?) that is 8 lug, it might not be a bad investment. IIRC SRW 1 ton 14FFs will bolt right in to the rear of a 67-72. what are the other specs on the truck so we know what other goodies should be there to nab.

the owner said it had a 500 caddy motor in it. The 400 tranny has been spoken for. Not sure what tc. i thought it was a dana 60 because the sides of the front cover were vertical (similar to the 44's), not perfectly round. What would the advantages be to convert to 8 lug? btw these parts are free, but if i have no need for them the owner will junk the truck. thanks 1faastC10 for the advice

If its a 74 3/4 ton it should have a 14 bolt in the rear, If it does I would get it.
Also onefastc10, they made dana 60's before 77, I have one in the rear of my 72. But if I have my info correct 73- 3/4 and 1 tons had 14b full-floaters.

jeremy meant dana 60 front axles. some say GM introduced them in '76, some say '77. either way, they only came in K30's. other manufacturers introduced the dana 60 front earlier, but the late 70's is when the "good" (open knuckle, disc brake, kingpin) dana 60's were used by truck makers. IHC used them in the last year of their fullsize line, 1975. Dodge was '75 also IIRC. Ford was 1977.5.
Nick, if the truck has a Caddy 500 there may be a chance that someone modded the truck and swapped a dana 60 in. the easiest way to tell is to look and count the u-bolts...if there are 2 on the driver side and 1 on the passenger side, then its a 60.

yes, i was referring to the front axle, as i assumed thats what the question was about. Dana 60s werent used 73+ in the rear. 10, 12, 14 bolts, and Dana 70s were the only rears available.
